"A dense purple color along with rich minerality and sweet notes of boysenberries and raspberries are found in this 2010. The irrepressible Michel Rolland (the winemaking consultant at Phelan-Segur) has fashioned an impressively pure, deep, classic St.-Estephe with a supple personality as well as robust tannins. Cellar it for 2-3 years and drink it over the following 12-15 years."

"51 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 49 % Merlot. Tiefes Purpur, satt in der Mitte, Granatschimmer am Rand. Leicht tintiges Bouquet, Weichselnote, rote Pflaumen und auch schwarze Kirschen, feine Tabakwürze. Samtener Gaumen, viel Stoff aber bereits mit weichen Konturen, zart pfeffrige Note im Innern des Extraktes zeigend, aromatisches Finale. Noch in den Startlöchern, also etwas defensiv bei der Primeurprobe. Nochmals auf Teyssier degustiert, da lag er einen halben Punkt höher. Es kann also in Richtung 19/20 gehen."

VINOUS

A blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 59% Merlot raised in 50% new oak, the nose takes its time to reveille in the glass: blackberry, small dark cherries, a touch of smoke and cigar box. Good definition but very tight. The palate is medium-bodied with powdery tannins, good definition but perhaps like Calon-Segur, a little disjointed at this stage. Good weight on the sinewy finish with dense black tarry fruits, quite uncompromising at the moment but that is not such a bad thing in the long term. The Phelan-Segur 2010 has good potential and may surprise in bottle just as the great 2005 is doing. Drink 2014-2025+ Tasted March 2011.

"Big, good powerful attack but too much heat on the mid palate. All about the tannic power. Good acidity though, and things right themselves on the last furlong. Tasted this at the chateau also a few weeks before en primeur, where the power was also in evidence – but the finish is more knitted together now, and this will continue to improve. 91-92/100. Drink 2018-2028."
