Nicht ohne Stolz zeigt uns Herve Berland, der zuvor lange Jahre in leitender Stellung auf Chateau Mouton Rothschild beschäftigt war, die Umbauten auf Chateau Montrose, die nicht der extrovertierten Architektur, wie man sie auf Cos d'Estournel in Szene gesetzt hat, sondern mehr der inwendigen, weniger technisch orientierten, sondern solidem Handwerk verpflichteten Version den Vorzug gab. Aber schließlich sind die neuen Eigentümer da ja auch vom Fach. Zwar nicht ganz im Stil eines Mantels, der den Pelz auf der Innenseite hat, aber doch auf jeden Fall so, dass man erst im Innern des Weinguts weiß, in welch musealer Atmosphäre man sich bewegt, herrscht das Understatement hier erfreulicherweise vor.
Welche Überraschung nun, dass trotz des immensen Aufwands, den man auf Chateau Montrose treibt, die Preisgestaltung des 2013ers sich eher an dieser zurückhaltenden Art orientiert.

"The Grand Vin represents 60% of production and is a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. It has a fragrant nose, quite ripe and somehow akin to a Saint Julien than a Saint Estephe as there is little trace of that telltale earthiness at the moment (and it is not geosmin). There is a hint of green bell pepper in the background and that become exaggerated by aeration but it is an attractive component. I wonder how this will play out during élevage? The palate is full-bodied with a firm grip. There are quite furry tannins here, a solid Montrose, a little charmless in its youth as is often the case, but exhibiting fine persistency on the bullish finish. You actually warm to it the longer it lingers, gathering momentum so to speak, so I'm keeping the faith. Tasted March 2014."

Smoke, coffee bean, fennel, tobacco, truffle and blackberry aromas come forth with no effort. In the mouth, the wine is soft and polished, especially when considering the vintage, the wine finishes with cassis, fresh black cherries and licorice. Tannic, but not obtrusive, the wine should be given at least 5 years to come around. On the bright side for fans of Montrose, this still places it at the top of the queue for early drinking vintages of Montrose! Representing 60% of the production, the wine was made from a blend of 68% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. With 2013, the property purposely decided not to include Cabernet Franc in the blend. Yielding 30 Hectoliters per hectare, the brix of the wine reached 12.9% alcohol which is aging in 60% new, French oak barrels. According to Herve Berland, who serves as a Group Managing Director and Member of the Management team, success of the wine in this difficult vintage was due to picking later than many estates, and having to remove leaves in the middle of September to help aerate the vines were key factors. Montrose finished their harvesting on October 16."

"Bei der Probe vermerkte ich bereits einen möglichen Vergleich mit ähnlichen Jahren wie 1998. Für den Montrose-Direktor Hervé Bérland ist es genau so. Während andere Weingüter meist eine halbe oder noch kleinere Ernte ausweisen, hat Montrose lediglich 20 % weniger. Sie seien vom Fäulnis auslösenden Regen vom 4. Oktober verschont worden und hätten zuwarten können. Zum Glück, denn Erntehelfer waren an diesen Tagen kaum mehr aufzutreiben weil das ganze Médoc aberntete um der aufsteigenden Fäulnis Herr zu werden. Sie hätten dann zuwarten können und dabei an Reife in den Tanninen gewonnen. Bei der Ernte hätte es zwar leicht geregnet aber das wäre nicht weiter schlimm gewesen. P.S. Montrose hat in der Primeurwoche den neuen Keller eingeweiht. Ein Chais von beeindruckender Schönheit und Grösse.

Degunotiz: 68 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 39 % Merlot , 3 % Petit Verdot. 60 % wurden als Grand Vin selektioniert. Sattes Purpur-Granat, dicht in der Mitte, lila Schimmer aussen. Defensiver Beginn, floral, tabakig, fein jodig schwarzer Pfeffer, Teer und etwas Korinthen, zurückhaltend, ja fast reserviert. Im Gaumen erhaben, gute Fleischrationen zeigend, blaubeerige Früchte, Lakritze. Ein introvertierter Montrose Klassiker mit mittlerem Druck, ab er langem Rückaroma. Geht in Richtung 1994, 1998, 2004. Könnte bei 19/20 landen. Ist aber so schon auf jeden Fall der beste Saint Estèphe!"

"(68% cabernet sauvignon, 29% merlot and 3% petit verdot): Bright ruby-red. Perfumed red fruit aromas are complicated by peppermint and flint on the pure nose. Crisp and fresh, with vibrant flavors similar to the aromas, but hard as nails now. Finishes long, tight and austere, with a steely minerality and a violet topnote. Given Montrose's track record for gaining in volume and flesh while aging in the bottle, I am hopeful that this will develop more charm and sweetness in the process. Very clean and precise: Montrose had fewer botrytis problems than most other Medoc estates thanks to the windy conditions on the plateau where this estate's vineyards are located."

"No chaptilisation at Montrose this year except for two small lots of merlot, the first ones picked. The rest reached 13.13.5% naturally, with picking finishing up Tuesday 15 October. Around 35 hl/h yield globally, very successful in terms of quantity compared to many in the Médoc. I tasted some lots of this wine in the vats just after the picking, so was vyer interested to retaste the en primeur sample. Overall this has chewy tannins that have real form and depth to them. Understated power and a good sense of elegance. The grapes had fragile skins at harvest, so no severe extraction here, seven day vinification with gentle maceration (18-20 days, compared to 26 days in 2012), 3.4ph. This has a slightly overblown attack, but settles down from the mid-palate onwards and is a hugely pretty wine. Great winemaking and construction skills on view. Recommended to Highly recommended. Drink 2020-2032."
