Mit atemberaubender Klarheit zeichnet sich ab, dass am nördlichsten Punkt des Médoc, der berufen ist, Weine vom zweiten Adelsstand hervorzubringen, mit höchster Konsequenz in den letzten beiden Jahren perfekte Ausprägungen monumentaler Größe entstanden sind. Das, was nicht weit entfernt unter der Ägide von Alfred Tesseron auf Pontet-Canet seit nunmehr 17 Jahren passiert, wurde hier, quasi im Zeitraffer, in 3 Jahren realisiert: die neue Definition absoluter Weingröße. Und natürlich darf man sich nicht scheuen, einen Vergleich mit dem Nachbarn Cos d'Estournel zu ziehen. Die Entwicklung dort kommt mir ein wenig vor wie die Liebe der Futuristen in den 20er Jahren: die Vergötterung der Technik. Gleichwohl bringt diese Liebe Weine von einzigartiger Exotik hervor.

Verkostungsnotiz:

Der in kolossale Schwärze gekleidete Montrose zeigt initial ein Naselspiel, das vor allem mit Zeit und in Muße dechiffriert werden will: schon im Bouquet offenbaren sich die Qualitäten zeitzehrender komplexer Fülle. Die Fruchtaromen sind von dunklen Früchten dominiert, mit flankierendem Himbeertouch, und werden von einem frischen Mineralienhauch, feiner Edelholzwürze, Kaffee- und Tabaknoten begleitet. In einer sehr beeindruckenden Mischung aus druckvoller Kraft und elegantem Gleiten füllt der eminent tiefgründige und wohlkonstituierte Wein den Gaumen aus und entfaltet dabei ein Erlebniskonzert höchster Klasse und Rasse. Der enorme Fruchtschub saftiger Fleischigkeit wird dabei bestens vom feinziselierten und dichtgewobenen Tanningrund ausbalanciert und führt den superben Montrose zu einem finessenreichen, langanhaltenden, fruchtinsprierten Finale von hohem aromatischem Esprit.
Die Wiedergeburt des monumentalen 1990er im noblen Gewand edelsten Gerbstoffzuschnitts ohne kraftprotzende Extrovertiertheit, mit „state-of-the-art-Extraktion“ und überlegener Zurückhaltung.

Deep, almost opaque in color, it has a tightly wound, arresting nose of blackberry, bilberry, crushed violets and graphite all with quite brilliant delineation. The palate is medium rather than full-bodied, laden with plenty of fruit, grippy like many 2010s with a structured, masculine and tannic finish that wards you away for another 10-15 years. However, it is still possible to admire the purity and delineation of this long-term Montrose, a wine that comes with a compulsory cellaring. Patience will be handsomely rewarded. "This is considered to be among the greatest vintages ever made in Montrose, right up with the 1929, 1945, 1947, 1959, 1961, 1989, 1990 and 2009. Harvest was October 15 to 17. The wine has really come on since I last tasted it, and it needs at least another 10 years of cellaring. The blend was 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. The wine is opaque black/blue, with an incredible nose of blueberry and blackberry liqueur, with hints of incense, licorice, and acacia flowers. Tannins are incredibly sweet and very present. The wine is full-bodied, even massive, with great purity, depth and a finish that goes on close to a minute. This is a 50- to 75-year-old wine that will repay handsomely those with good aging genes. (Note: The Chateau Montrose website gives an aging potential of 2020-2100.)"

"The 2010 Montrose is a fabulous wine, and I was leaning toward giving it a three-digit score, which it may ultimately merit after it resolves some of its very sweet tannin. It is not as soft or flamboyant as the 2009, but it is a great classic, coming in at 13.9% natural alcohol. Representing 64% of the total production, the final blend is 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot (which is one percent different than the barrel sample blends that were presented). Inky bluish/purple in color, with classic blueberry, black currant, crushed rock and floral notes, hints of graphite, and lots of wild mountain berry fruit, this wine is extravagantly rich, has very sweet but noticeable tannin, laser-like precision, a massive, full-bodied mouthfeel and a finish of close to 50+ seconds. This remarkable wine will probably tighten up somewhat in the bottle, and need most of a decade to shed some tannin and its rather grapy, primary personality. The finish blew me away, and the overall power, richness and balance of this wine are virtually perfect. Look for it to drink well for half a century or more. Although Jean Delmas remains a consultant at Montrose, he has yielded his primary responsibilities over to a younger staff, but he still believes the 2010 Montrose is one of the all-time great wines ever produced at this estate, equaling or exceeding the quality of the 1929, 1945, 1959, 1961, 1989, 1990 or 2009."

The 2010 harvest took place between September 27 and October 15, and the final blend is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot that achieved 13.75% natural alcohol, a fraction above the 2009's 13.7%. Somewhat reminiscent of the 1989, only even inkier and richer, the 2010 boasts a dense purple color along with glorious aromatics of blueberries, boysenberries, black currants and a crushed chalk-like minerality. The tannins are less intrusive than I would have suspected for such a young Montrose, but they are unquestionably ripe and well-integrated. Deep, full-bodied and massive, this beauty should be at its finest between 2018-2050."

It has 13.8% alcohol with a pH 3.65. The bouquet is tightly wound at first, pure blackberry, dark cherries, just a touch of coca with very good vigour. Very juicy, quite saturated with a very dense, impenetrable finish. Sinewy, structured and masculine, with a slight saline touch on the aftertaste. This is a great Montrose that will one day be fascinating to compare against the 2009. Drink 2020-2050. Tasted March 2011."

And expected to increase), 37% Merlot, 9% Malbec, 1% Petit Verdot. 64% of total production and remarkable for the unusually high proportion of Merlot in the grand vin blend – because of the purchase of vineyard from Phelan Ségur last year (did this help the Phelan purchase of restaurant Taillevent in Paris?) Very deep crimson. Quite different from most of these northern Médoc wines – much rounder and less fresh (presumably because of the Merlot). Very different from classical austere Montroses but soft and charming. As a wine, it is extremely well made with just a little furriness on the finish. As a Montrose it’s a bit disconcerting but my mark ignores this. Rather unusual lack of freshness. Just a bit plodding, astringent and sweet on the end."

"I certainly dropped the ball on this wine in its youth. But I get it now. Holy Cow! The wine is black, almost opaque in color. There is so much concentration, you can almost eat it with a spoon. The wine is powerful, yet clearly refined. It's dense, intense, full bodied and rich, simultaneously remaining in perfect balance and harmony. With mouth coating levels of intensity, the finish must last 60 seconds. Not as flashy or fleshy as the opulent 2009, yet it's at the same level of quality in a different style."

Puis le fruité apparaît pur, mûr, légèrement fumé, évoquant le cabernet sauvignon. Minutieux en entrée de bouche, suave au milieu, riche et particulièrement séducteur, le vin évolue suave malgré une trame serrée. Il s’achève complexe, profond, noble, avec beaucoup de goût et une superbe stimulation. Bravo !"

"J’ai eu une grande émotion en goûtant ce vin en juin dernier. Sa classe le positionne au dessus du 2009. Couleur sombre, pourpre et belle. Nez fin, fruité, mûr et frais. Notes d’encre. Entrée en bouche ample, puis le vin se développe complexe et noble, avec beaucoup de goût, des tannins juteux, parfaitement enrobés. Riche en milieu de bouche, le vin évolue profond sur la texture tannique la plus sophistiquée que je connaisse dans ce cru. Très grande longueur. Assemblage quasi identique au 2009 : 62 % cabernet sauvignon, 32 % merlot, 4 % cabernet franc et 2 % petit verdot. Degré d’alcool : 13°8."

"This is a top Montrose: gorgeous deep red, delicate, subtle and elegant on the nose- the nose of a first growth, really! And this is exactly what impressed me most; ripened yet superbly fresh fragrances of raspberry mingle beautifully with scents of blackcurrant - a trait which is so rare and incredibly hard to achieve. After such a fantastic nose, I must admit I expected a more vigorous entry. The wine picked up power and breadth gradually and particularly on the mid-palate. Then it literally melted away, dense and ethereal in the mouth, before ending on one of the best weaves of tannins for Montrose since the 1996 en primeur –only this time even more mature and sophisticated. Mighty finish, where aromas take the structure over. This 2010 Montrose is sheer aesthetic bliss for our senses. It is the most polished vintage since the new management took over. Its effort for precision and balance bears the Delmas-mark and reminds us of how Haut-Brion is built. It is also the least subdued vintage that the estate has ever presented in mid-February. The work and effort put in so as to raise quality are truly praise-worthy. I must admit I failed to understand the changes fully when they were brought about and judged the 2006 and 2007 presentations too discreet, linear even.
Today, the estate is rethinking just about everything and a new cellar is being put in place.
Always tuned in to nature’s rhythm, Montrose is slowly but surely taking its due place among Bordeaux top labels. No doubt it is destined for great heights.

"53 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 37 % Merlot, 9 % Cabernet Franc, 1 % Petit Verdot. 64 % Grand Vin. 45hl/ha. Dichtes Purpur mit lila Schimmer in der Mitte, fein rubiner Rand aussen. Reserviertes Bouquet, florale Cabernetnoten, schwarze Pfefferkörner, Havannatabak. Kompakter Gaumen, rote Pflaumenschalen, ein Hauch Dörrfrüchte, dunkle Hölzer, noch mehlige Tannine, wie immer mit sehr viel versprechendem Potential bestückt. Kein grosser Kommunikator und deshalb vielleicht unterschätzt. Seine hohe Punktezahl wird er erst in 20 Jahren erstmals beweisen können. (19/20). 15: Das Bouquet war verhalten und zeigte wohl nur etwa einen Drittel dessen was an nasalen Aromen in seiner Reife zu erwarten sein wird. So tendenziell Trüffel, Lakritze dunkle Edelhölzer. Was besonders auffiel; seine absolut geradlinige Ausrichtung.
Im Gaumen ein Tanninmonster, welches aber durchaus einen gewissen Erstcharme zeigt. Dies deshalb, weil die immensen Tannine reif sind. Der Wein selbst ist es aber noch bei Weitem nicht. Wer im Jahrgang 1957 (Gabriel) oder früher geboren ist, der soll sich anderen, älteren Montrose-Jahrgängen zuwenden. Die Chance diesen unglaublich alterungsfähigen Saint-Estèphe-Deuxième in seiner vollen Genussphase zu erleben scheint da eher gering zu sein. Und wenn man es dann eventuell doch noch erleben würde, dann machen vielleicht die abgeflachten Geschmackpapillen nicht mehr mit. Momentan liegt er noch bei 19/20. Die 20/20 werden aber wohl in 20 Jahren in Griffnähe rücken… (19/20). 18: MONTROSE 2010 – EINE ZWISCHENBILANZ

Die Fassprobe ist eine Vermutung. Die Genussphase liefert dann (hoffentlich) die Bestätigung. Dazwischen liegt die Reduktionsphase. Und die variiert je nach Jahrgangskonstellation. Je mehr Tannin und Säure mit im Spiel sind, desto unnahbarer gibt sich der Wein in der Dauer seiner Flaschenreifung. Als ich anfangs April 2011 diesen Blend aus 53 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 37 % Merlot, 9 % Cabernet Franc und 1 % Petit Verdot auf dem Weingut verkostete, wurde mir schnell klar, dass dies zwar ein fraglos grosser Montrose wird. Aber – ich notierte mir auch, dass wohl er seiner hohen Bewertung (19/20) erst in etwa 20 Jahren gerecht wird. Es wäre aber nicht seriös, einen Jahrgang einfach so lange degustationslos liegen zu lassen, bis er dann eventuell in seine Reife kommt. Zudem ist die Neugier bekannterweise ein guter Informant. Also habe ich heute den noch viel zu jungen Château Montrose 2010 entkorkt und über acht Stunden lang pedantisch verfolgt. Und es kam wie es vermutungsweise auch kommen musste. Die Nase führte auf eine falsche Fährte, denn hier zeigten sich bereits erstaunlich viele Aromen. Dunkle Beeren, Rauch, Teer, Edelhölzer (vor allem Mahagoni), schwarze Oliven und Baumnussschalen. Im Gaumen blockte er ab. Die Adstringenz ist massiv, verlangend und er birgt Tannine für Übermorgen in sich. Hier hilft selbst langes Dekantieren (noch) nichts. Nur warten. Und nochmals warten! Wie lange wohl? Meiner Ansicht ist das einer der lagerfähigsten Montrose seiner Geschichte. Und vielleicht wird er eines Tages gar das Punktemaximum erlangen. Dann bin ich entweder im Altersheim oder im Grand-Cru-Himmel. Also überlasse ich dieses Feld den jüngeren Weinfreaks und tröste mich mit reiferen Jahrgängen dieses ikonenhaften Saint-Estèphe’s. Ohne jeglichen Groll. Man kann schliesslich von einem Montrose nicht verlangen, dass er gleichzeitig zu den lagerfähigsten Crus gehört und dann in jeder Phase grossen Spass bereitet. 19/20. Geschätzte Genussreife; von 2030 bis 2100???."

"The 2010 Montrose boasts a killer bouquet with beautifully delineated black fruit laced with cedar and tobacco. With time its sous-bois scents become more prominent. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a little grainy in texture with fine acidity. This is a masculine and broody Saint-Estèphe that will need another decade in bottle to shave its edges. But what immense structure and density. Fantastic. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the BI Wines & Spirits 10-Year On tasting."

Enters big, dense and suave, showing rich, almost viscous red and black fruit flavors complicated by dried herbs, tobacco, and minerals. The very long finish showcases some youthfully chewy tannins that could use a bit more polish. This large-scale Montrose is a bit chunky at present and quite backward; it will need plenty of time in the cellar but should prove to be very ageworthy (30+ years), although it's not nearly as thrilling as the splendid 2009 made here. The harvest at Montrose took place from September 27 to October 15, and the wine avoids any hint of overripeness, but flowering was somewhat uneven. Incidentally, Montrose bought a parcel of vines from Phelan-Segur last year, and this year one-third of the grapes from those 22 hectares went into the grand vin This explains the slight increase in the percentages of cabernet franc and merlot in the final blend, as these varieties were well represented in the purchased hectares."
