Château Haut Bailly 2013

Die Appellation Pessac-Léognan, die mit Ausnahme von Ch. Haut Brion aus der Leit-Klassifizierung exkludiert ist, bringt gerade aus diesem Mangel heraus eine Fülle stilistisch eigenständiger Weine hervor, die zeigen, wie unterschiedlich sich ein Terroir interpretieren lässt. Wenn es um Eleganz und Feinheit geht, dann kommt die hochwertigste Seide der bordelaiser Haute-Couture aus den Händen von Véronique Sanders und ihrem Château Haut-Bailly. Mit femininer Beharrlichkeit und Intuition hat sie es geschafft, Haut-Bailly in den letzten Jahren zum Flaggschiff des burgundischen Bordeaux zu machen, ohne jede Konzession an punkteheischenden Popanz.

"The 2013 Château Haut Bailly is a blend of 64% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc picked 1 to 10 October, cropped at 20.6hl/ha. The grand vin represents 40% of the crop and it saw 55% new oak (though Véronique Sanders told me that it may undergo a shorter élevage). It comes in at 12.8% alcohol. It has a clean pleasant bouquet, defined but perhaps missing the usual flair and exuberance, which is typical of the vintage. The palate is structured with a firm grip, a slight saltiness in the background. There is tightly packed black fruit here and it builds nicely to a masculine, tobacco-tinged finish. I will happily drink this over the next ten years whilst I await the 2009 and 2010 to come round. Tasted March 2014. "

"Plenty of impact right from the first nose, this is well extracted with medium intensity ruby in colour, with a slightly sweet cherry and cedarwood nose, fairly classic for the appellation and not pushing too hard against the vintage. There is good freshness on the attack, with the tannic structure silky and soft, coming in at the mid-palate to cradle the fruit. Moutwatering, with appealing astringency suggesting the wine will develop and fatten over ageing. A serious wine, with great potential. Recommended to Highly Recommended. Drink 2020-2036."
