Chateau Haut Bailly 2010

In einem Atemzug mit dem Protofuturisten Cos d’Estournel und dem Fundamentalönologen Pontet-Canet muss man Haut-Bailly als Träger der Eleganzkrone nennen. In einer Zeit, in der die unter dem Siegel „Cru-Classé en 1855“-Affiliierten sich abzusetzen drohen vom Rest der bordelaiser-Weinelite, setzt Veronique Sanders mit ihrer vinophilen Charme-Offensive das Zeichen, dass es auch ohne Adelstitel und „trotz Frau“ geht.

Verkostungsnotiz:
Der in gutem Sinn am besten geerdete Pessac verwöhnt die Nase mit einem in seiner Breite umfassenden, in der Präzision seiner Wirkeinheiten äußerst distinkten Bouquet von saftig-reifen dunklen Beeren, floraler Aromatik, dezenter Zedernwürze mit feiner Unterholznote, schokoladigen Obertönen und frischetragender Mineralität.
In mühelos gleitender Grandezza, im eleganten Schwung seidiger Leichtigkeit und gleichwohl der Tiefe dichtgestaffelter Substanz, füllt der Haut-Bailly den Gaumen aus, entfaltet dabei eine äußerst druckvolle, in ihrer aristokratischen Ausgewogenheit beachtliche Attacke femininer Cabernet-Ausprägung, und läßt ihn so zu einem hochaktiven Resonanzraum in sich ruhender, keine exogenen Kraftimpulse benötigenden Größe werden. Die Attributsträger Frucht, Extrakt, Säure und Tannin sind jeweils so präzise konturiert, wie das nur möglich ist und vereinen sich dabei in wechselseitiger Überlagerung und Durchdringung zu einem grandiosen Wein von großer Anmut und Würde.

Mit Veronique Sanders halte ich 2010 für den konsequenteren und damit leicht größeren Wurf als 2009

"Deep plum/purple, Haut-Bailly’s 2010 required some coaxing to appreciate its subtle notes of barbecue smoke, lead pencil shavings and creme de cassis as well as its touches of pomegranate and forest floor. The oak is pushed far into the background and the tannins are extremely silky, but the intensity of the wine is profound and the finish lingers for close to 55 seconds. This wine is ripe yet delicate, powerful yet stylish, and essentially resembles a remarkable fashion design from a house of haute couture. This wine needs a good 7-8 years of bottle age and should keep for 40-50+ years.

This quintessential example of pure finesse, elegance, harmony and delicacy is combined into a wine that lingers intensely with near-perfect poise and character. Haut-Bailly’s ethereal character is virtually unmatched in Bordeaux. Normally, general manager/winemaker Veronique Sanders fashions a blend that approximates 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. That was the exact blend of her 2009, and I doubt the 2010 deviates significantly from that. "

"Proprietor Robert Wilmers and general manager/winemaker Veronique Sanders have done an extraordinary job at this estate, which has now become one of the superstars of Bordeaux as recent vintages have admirably demonstrated. An opulently styled effort, the blue/purple-hued 2010 offers a sweet kiss of graphite, charcoal, black cherries, black currants and compelling forest floor-like notes. A seamless integration of acidity, tannin, alcohol and oak is found in this full-bodied yet delicate, precise 2010. There is plenty of tannin but it is well-hidden behind the extravagant quantity of fruit. Give it 5-7 years and drink it over the following 35-40 years."

"The nose is very dense and rather introspective at first, gradually unfurling in the glass with blackberry, boysenberry and a slight 'clayey' aroma that moves towards coca with continued aeration. The palate is full-bodied and very powerful, very structured and tannic although the tannins and not quite as fine as say, Smith Haut-Lafitte or Pape-Clement. Touches of graphite linger on the aftertaste. The sample at the Château needed a little more tension and precision...the sample at the UGC gave it to me! Tasted April 2011."

"From 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 36% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, a blend similar to what they used in 2009, the 2010 vintage is the product of low yields. For a comparison, 2009 was 46 hectoliters per hectare. In 2010, due to the draught and problems with the Merlot flowering, yields were reduced to 37 hectares per hectoliter. Low yields and weather allowed the wine to reach 13.9 % alcohol, which is slightly higher than the 13.75 the property enjoyed in 2009. . Inky purple in color, with pungent aromas of smoke, licorice, truffle, spice, ash, tobacco and blackberry liqueur, the wine is concentrated, deep, rich and opulent in texture. With palate staining fruit, layers of ripe, velvety tannins and a long, pure, cassis and blackberry finish, this wine offers strong competition for the 2009. Veronique Sanders thinks the 2010 is a better wine. I am not sure I agree. But I do know, it’s going to be a lot of comparing 2010 with 2009, 2008, 2006 and 2005 over the next few decades."

"My best score ever given to the cru en primeur. One of the most intense emotions of this en primeur campaign and the best Haut Bailly I have ever tasted - right behind the 1964. Palate is the word. Magnificent on entry: pulpy, gushing with fruit and immediately showing a finely woven texture. Wonderfully aromatic, broad and generous on the mid-palate, with fat and an unsurpassed velvety feel in the mouth. The superb mix of pulp and fresh lively fruit is the terroir finest expression. A terrific wine, showing poise, amazing charm and complexity. A beauty!"

"Dichtes Purpur mit schwarzem und violettem Schimmer. Nobles Bouquet von reifen, fast cremigem Cabernet in der Nase geprägt, Veilchen und Cassis, florales Parfüm im Innern aufweisend, tolle Tabakterroirürze. Komplexer Gaumen, extrem dicht und doch schon angenehm stoffig, auch hier Tabak und sogar Trüffel im Untergrund zeigend. Ein sehr tief schürfender Haut-Bailly mit Charakter und enormem Potential für garantierte 50 Jahre. Mit dem Handicap, dass die ersten 10 Jahre gar nichts läuft! Insgesamt drei Mal verkostet. (19/20).

12: Dunkles Granat, satt in der Mitte, rubiner Rand. Royales Bouquet, bereits das Nasenbild strahlt eine unglaubliche Vielschichtigkeit aus, Trüffel, schwarzbeerige Konturen, Teer, Pumpernickelbrot, Lakritze, man kann sich nicht satt riechen an diesem jungen, viel versprechenden, perfekten Bordeaux-Nasenbild. Im Gaumen königliche Adstringenz, umfassende Aromatik, wieder im schwarzbeerigen Bereich, erhabenes, langes Finale. Hier wähnt man sich in den ganz grossen, alten Zeiten dieses Weingutes. Vor fast 100 Jahren war Haut-Bailly genau gleich teuer wie Haut Brion. Und dahin kommt dieser absolut geniale 2010er auch. Bei der Qualität - nicht beim Preis! Das war klar der beste Wein im überfüllten Saal. (19/20).

21: Sattes Granat-Purpur. Die Grundaromatik wirkt so primär, dass man ihn fast als Fassmuster vermutet. Pfeffriger Ansatz, frisch gepflückte, blaue und schwarze Beeren, Lakritze, dunkle Edelhölzer. Zeigt viel Power in den zu Kopf steigenden Nasenaromen. Im Gaumen legt er los und dokumentiert eine massive Adstringenz mit verlangenden Gerbstoffen, welche sich mit der Säure und den Muskeln verbinden. So wirkt er – auf hohem Niveau – noch ziemlich asketisch. Auch im Finale vermittelt er ein immenses Alterungspotential zu seinen Gunsten. Was aber logischerweise zu Lasten einer viel späteren Genussreife tendiert. Ich würde ihn erst wieder in zehn Jahren versuchen und schätze seine beste Zeit so zwischen 2030 bis 2060 ein. (19/20)"

Then penetrating, dry and classic in the mouth, with outstanding sap and grip to its powerful, savory flavors of strawberry, raspberry, smoke, dark chocolate and spices. Impeccably balanced wine with outstanding depth and extract; really spreads out horizontally to saturate the palate. Finishes with extremely fine-grained tannins and great subtlety of fruit. I look forward to watching this outstanding Haut-Bailly unwind over the next 20 years."
