„Blended of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Cos d'Estournel is deep garnet in color with a touch of brick and sporting a lot of tertiary evolution on the nose. It leaps from the glass with opulent sandalwood, Chinese five spice, cigar box and leather scents over a core of prunes, baked cherries, dried mulberries and eucalyptus plus a touch of potpourri. Medium-bodied, the palate is laden with fragrant fruitcake and exotic spice layers, framed by wonderfully plush tannins and a refreshing line, finishing with an exhilarating menthol lift.“

„Showing some lightening at the edges as well as some amber, this is the least impressive of the greatest vintages for Cos d’Estournel between 2000 and 2009. It is an outstanding wine, but it is closer to maturity and lacking the concentration, texture, and overall compelling aromatics of more recent vintages. The wine displays roasted herbs intermixed with licorice, incense, black cherry, and black currant fruit. Medium-bodied, rather than full, elegant, with some spicy tannins and a nice sweet finish, compared to the other top classified growths, this wine is on a much faster evolutionary track and can be drunk now and over the next 15 or more years.“

„Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 2000 tasting in London. This is a fantastic Cos d’Estournel that I was unsure about out of barrel, but is now blossoming with age. It is adorned with a lovely nose: blackberry, wild hedgerow, espresso, a touch of chocolate and sandalwood. Very fine definition and vigour. The palate is full-bodied with ripe tannins, superb symmetrical structure, dense, obdurate black fruits, a saline note, very well balanced, very focused, broadening out nicely towards the ravishing, supple finish. Excellent. Drink 2015-2040.“

„Tasted at the Cos d’Estournel dinner at St. John. The millennial wine was so disappointing in its youth, but this has undoubtedly come together in bottle. It has a very deep hue. The nose is tight at first, opening up nicely to develop scents of blackberry, cassis, a touch of violets and certainly less of the tertiary character it showed in its youth. There is leanness and a focus towards the finish that is captivating and yet considering the vintage one would still expect greater weight and depth of flavour. It is possible this may come with time because it is a wine that has put its troubled youth behind it and is improving every year. Drink 2015-2030+“

„This wine puts on weight and grows in stature every time I go back to it. In fact, from the bottle it was better than ever. A blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, the 2000 Cos d'Estournel suffers only in comparison with its successor, the 2001. Deep bluish purple in color with a reticent but emerging bouquet of cedar, licorice, blueberry, cassis, vanilla, and lead pencil shavings, this medium-bodied, slightly sinewy Cos d'Estournel has relatively high tannin, an excellent mid-palate, and a persistent finish. Purity and classicism are hallmarks of this top-flight wine. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2022.“

„This wine has put on weight, thrown off the subtle herbaceous notes detectable last year, and fleshed out its mid-palate. A blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, it exhibits an inky ruby/purple color, a luscious perfume of blackberries, cassis, licorice, spice, and toasty oak, medium to full body, a beautiful texture, a concentrated mid-palate, sweet tannin, and a long, elegant, refined finish. „Jean-Guillaume Prats was not sure whether or not a small lot of Cabernet Franc would be added to the blend I tasted. Made from yields of 40-42 hectoliters per hectare, it presently is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and the rest Merlot. A dense ruby/purple color is accompanied by scents of green peppers, spice, cedar, and minerals. The aromatics suggest considerable complexity as this wine ages, but the austere, earthy, tannic, compressed style is not for everybody. Medium-bodied and beautifully pure, this 2000 may always remain somewhat on the tough side because of an austere, abundantly tannic finish. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2020.“

Very appetising and quite racy and ethereal. Interesting. Obviously here for the long term even if not with enormous ripeness and mass."

„Popped and poured for Father’s Day, the wine is elegant, opulent, silky and fresh on the palate. The wine offers a strong cigar box and tobacco nose, along with distinctive mint and green peppery tones, with a touch of 5 spice, smoke, roasted cassis, cedar and pepper. This is fully mature. There is no reason to decant, except for sediment, or to hold any longer. It’s a gorgeous, old school expression of Cos d’Estournel this hits all the right notes“

„Bouteilles vs magnums. En bouteille. Couleur sombre, d'intensité normale et légèrement évoluée. Beau nez plus fruité que dans le magnum, d'aspect plus jeune et plus réservé. Bouche très fruitée, plus grasse au milieu, avec plus de relief, évoluant sur une longue finale savoureuse au goût de café. C'est très bon. En conclusion ce vin a moins de nez que le magnum, mais plus de bouche.“

„Couleur rouge sombre. Intense. Belle. Presque noire. Etonnante ! Nez d'intensité moyenne. Fruité. Une touche un zeste verte. A l'agitation n'a pas la finesse qui se dégage des 2001 et 2002. Fait plus ancien style. Bouche ronde, assez puissante mais aussi plutôt massive. Il manque à ce vin une minutie de chair de raisin que je retrouve plus en 2001 et 2002. L'attente le bonifiera, la notion de terroir le grandira au vieillissement mais, vis-à-vis d'autres crus plus en avance à la même époque, il restera sans doute un peu en-deçà. En particulier, sa tanicité certes enrobée manque d'une concentration intérieure.“

„Couleur rouge sombre. Intense. Pourpre. Belle. Nez intense. Fruité. Assez frais et plutôt aromatique. Notes de noix de coco et d'épices. Très original. Cardamome. Plus réglissé à l'agitation Entrée en bouche douce, se développant sur un corps rond et juteux, assez plein tout en étant aérien. Lente évolution tanique juteuse sur un fond de beau boisé chaud et patiné. Belle longueur agréable et tramée sans être très profonde. Manque une étincelle.“

„Couleur rouge sombre. Intense. Pourpre. Belle. Nez d'intensité moyenne. Mais il y a encore cette note de poivron décrite en 1997. Touche fraîche. Note de bois neuf. Pas assez mûr à l'agitation. Entrée en bouche douce, se développant sur un corps moyen, légèrement frais. Le vin évolue juteux sur une bonne concentration, plutôt ferme et très boisé, mais pour le coup manquant de charme. Finale réglissée et tanique de longueur moyenne à bonne, un peu plus serrée que d'habitude. C'est un vin qui retombe sur ses pattes en finale, mais il lui manque quelque chose.“

01: Fassprobe (18/20):

"Tiefes Violett mit fast schwarzen Reflexen. Intensives Kaffee-, Palisanderbouquet, Kakaonoten, schwarze Oliven, Backpflaumen und feine Würztöne, unerhört intensiv und so geballt wie schon lange nicht mehr. Im Gaumen einen Mundvoll Wein, viel Fett, Fleisch und fein stoffige Konturen, blaubeeriges Fruchtspiel mit viel Brombeeren und wiederum Pflaumen, die Frucht ist perfekt reif und der Wein ist klar ausgerichtet, er hat das Potential vom genialen 96er Cos und zeigt die Rundungen vom üppigen 82er, ist aber noch um Nuancen feiner. Dabei zeigt er trotzdem, dass er ein St. Estèphe ist. Im Moment wirken die Merlot- und Cabernet-Trauben noch etwas polarisierend, aber das wird sich mit dem Barriquenausbau schon noch richten. Im Herbst 2001 wieder auf Cos degustiert: Während der Wein an Primeurproben eine gewisse Faszination zeigte und knapp die 18/20 Punkte erreichte, präsentierte er sich im Herbst 2000 sehr müde. Ist er im Herbst leblos, fad und ohne Charisma? Mein Gott, ich erinnere mich noch gut daran wie ich die 1985er, 1986er, 1988er und 1989er aus dem Fass verkostete. Alles recht grosse bis ganz grosse Weine. Aber dieser 2000er hat heute in derselben Phase nicht einmal die Hälfte dieser Faszination. Somit kann er das auch nicht in zehn Jahren hergeben, was er heute nicht hat, oder? Cos ist drauf und dran, alle Joker zu verlieren und unter den Super-Seconds (gehört er eigentlich moralisch noch dazu?) den schwarzen Peter zu ziehen. Wenn sich der 2000er auf diesem Niveau weiterentwickelt, dann wird er in seiner Genussphase nie mehr die 18/20 Punkte der Primeurverkostung erreichen. Bleiben wir aber bis es so weit ist noch auf der optimistischen Seite: (18/20)."

04: "An der Buchpremiere in Linz bekam ich einen kleinen Schluck. Erstaunlich das Bouquet; weil bereits nussig mit intensiven Kaffeeröstnoten. Im Gaumen samtig, weich und eigentlich jetzt schon viel Freude bereitend- ausser bei seinem Preis den er auch noch in 10 Jahren nicht wert sein wird. (18/20)."

06: "Drei Mal innert 2 Monaten erlebt. Einmal in Hamburg, einmal in Wien und einmal an der grossen Cos Probe in Appenzell. Mittleres Granat, zarter Ziegelrotschimmer am Rand. Röstiges Bouquet, Schwarzbrot, Pumpenickel und viel Zedernnuancen, heller Tabak. Im Gaumen noch fest, körnig, Lebkuchengewürze und Kardamom im dunkelröstigen, nach Mokka schmeckenden Finish. Ein grosser Bordeaux, der aber mit den anderen 2000er seiner Klasse nicht ganz mithalten kann. (18/20)."

14: "Leicht mattes Purpur mit lila Reflexen. Warmes Bouquet, viel dunkle Röstnoten, duftet nach Schwarzbrotkruste, reife Pflaumen, ein Hauch frisch gerösteter Kaffee, duftet fein und elegant. Kein komplizierter Nasenansatz, also «easy to handle». Im Gaumen stoffig, dicht, weiche Tannine, noch leicht mehliges Extrakt. Sonst aber irgendwie Friede, Freude Eierkuchen. Macht jetzt schon viel Spass. Kein ganz grosser Cos, weil etwas zu wenig konzentriert und somit auch nicht genügend komplex."

Juicy and tight; hints at the power of the vintage but misses out on the sweetness and pliancy of the best examples. Offers a reasonably seamless texture but the firmly tannic finish seems a bit herbaceous following the 2001."
