"The 1994 reveals red and blackcurrants, oak, and toast in the nose. Although soft for a wine of this vintage, and lacking some of the mid-palate intensity possessed by the 1993, it is well made, dense, and medium-bodied. Despite light tannin in the finish, this wine should drink well young, and keep for 7-8 years."

"The 1994 is a very good wine, with a healthy dark ruby color with purple tints, fine ripeness, medium body, good density, some tannin, and an overall sense of balance, extract, and character. The wine is mouthfilling, savory, and ideal for drinking over the next decade. Phelan-Segur has been an immensely popular, well-known estate since the late eighties, turning out one after another top notch wines that were under-valued given how good they were, particularly in vintages such as 1989 and 1990. All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux."

"This is probably the finest overachieving, unclassified St.-Estephe chateau. The property made excellent, close to outstanding wines in both 1989 and 1990, a good wine in 1991, and competent wines in 1992 and 1993. The 1994 is a potentially long-lived wine, with an impressive saturated purple color, sweet, jammy cassis aromas, medium body, moderate tannin, and fine ripeness and chewiness in the mouth and finish. It will require 4-5 years of cellaring and should keep for two decades."
