"The 2016 Clos de l'Oratoire is terrific. Deep, dense and powerful, with more finesse in its tannins than is often the case, the 2016 boasts superb balance. Black cherry, smoke, tar, licorice and incense add to its rich, exotic personality. Plush and unusually supple, this is a real knockout. The tannins are there, but they are nearly buried by the sheer intensity of the fruit. The 2016 is shaping up to be a superb Clos de l'Oratoire. Tasted three times."

"The 2016 Clos de l'Oratoire is dense, resonant, but also quite closed in on itself. Black cherry, plum, chocolate, licorice and smoke all meld together in this super-expressive, layered Saint-Émilion. In 2016, Clos de l'Oratoire is quite understated and shows more of an emphasis on freshness than in the past, typical of all the Stephan von Neipperg's wines today. Tasted two times."

"The 2016 Clos de l’Oratoire comes from a particularly cool microclimate. Aged in 45% new oak for 14 months, it has a very sweet, ripe bouquet of black cherries, crème de cassis, vanilla and crushed violet. This is almost too sweet! The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin, and it feels a little too muscular and structured toward the finish, when I am seeking more finesse. A Saint-Émilion determined to make an impression, but perhaps trying too hard."
