In dem Sinne, in dem Etiketten eine bescheidene Größe haben, ist es vielleicht etwas forsch, aber keineswegs irreführend, davon zu schreiben, der Batailley des Jahrgangs 2022 trete im kleinen Schwarzen auf. Die Garderobenwahl hat weniger mit irgendwelchen Begegenheiten der Eignerfamilie Casteja zu tun als vielmehr mit viel höheren und geradezu ikonischen Zusammenhängen. Denn die im Jahr 2022 verstorbene Queen und ihr zuvor bereits verschiedener Gemahl, Prinz Philipp, hatten zu ihrer silbernen Hochzeit den wundervollen Batailley des Krönungsjahrgangs 1947 ausgewählt. Dass dies eine ausgezeichnete Wahl war, kann der Verfasser dieser Zeilen bestätigen, denn noch kurz vor dem Corona-Intermezzo präsentierte sich dieser Pauillac vorzüglich.
Der Batailley 2022 ist aber nicht nur seiner großen Fangemeinde in UK wegen, die ihn in ungeahnten Mengen werden einlagern wollen, um ihre persönlichen Jubiläen damit zu begehen, sehr zu empfehlen. Denn zusammen mit Haut Bages Liberal, der aber eher der tänzelnden Pauillac-Fraktion angehört, ist der Batailley ein Pauillac-Ausrufezeichen par excellence.
Er vermählt Kraft mit Eleganz, Fruchtbrillanz und -klarheit mit Tanninsouveränität und Tiefe mit Charme. Sein Alterungspotential ist beträchtlich, seine Opportunität nicht minder.

"Drinking Window: 2025 – 2049. Vibrant and intense colour in the glass, richly scented, floral and perfumed, open and inviting. Intense and concentrated, the fruit is dark and ripe but there’s no hint of over ripeness here and instead you get cool blue fruits, chalky tannins and minty freshness with accents of liquorice, coffee, tobacco, cedar spice and clove. Tannins are clearly at the fore, giving the structure and the frame while the juicy acidity gives the energy and life. Still on the serious side, not tense so much as there’s good persistence, it’s lean and streamlined, but refined in a spiced and mineral way. Gorgeous terroir markers, lovely detail and precision, you can feel they haven't worked too much or tried too hard. It carries the signature of the estate in the serious structure, it’s a big wine, there’s such power here but so well controlled and delivered. Razor sharp, focussed and persistent. A gorgeous 2022, well executed and will be a clear success."

"Licorice, flowers, mint, peach, currants, blackberries, tobacco and wet forest floor aromatics create the nose. The palate is rich, supple, creamy, fresh, and loaded with sweet, blackberries, white pepper, plums, currants and spice. The wine is full-bodied, round, and concentrated, with a long endnote leaving you with peppery licorice, spearmint, and creme de cassis on the backend. The wine is a blend of 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 22% Merlot and 3% Petit Verdot. 14.20% ABV. 3.7 pH. The harvest took place September 8 - September 27. Yields were 42 Hectoliters per hectare. 70% of the harvest was used to produce the Grand Vin. Drink from 2027-2055."

Minutieux en entrée de bouche, savoureux au milieu, avec un corps longiforme, le vin évolue séveux et long, dans la persistance, sans marquer le tannin. "Deep purple colour with violet hue and black core. Very expressive and multi-layered nose. Distinct fruit, ripe blackcurrants, hints of blackberries and mulberries, sweet elderberries in the background. Well-structured with hints of mild spices, gingerbread and cardamom, vanilla in the background. Noble toasting and subtle oak. On the palate a powerful and persistent wine, precisely shaped, presenting freshness and excellent depth of flavour. Pure fruit and wonderful spices lingering in the finish. Elegance in perfection. The best Batailley ever tasted en primeur."

"The 2022 Batailley was picked from 8 to 27 September (at the same time as Lynch Moussas) and is raised in 55% new oak. lt comes with a newly-designed label. lt has a well-defined bouquet with blackberry and cassis, violet and tobacco. The palate is clean and precise on the entry. With lovely focus and detail, this is a sophisticated Batailley with a surfeit of mineralite and excellent clarity and typicity on the finish. Unequivocally, one of the finest iterations of Batailley that the Casteja family has overseen. This Batailley is like driving a classic old car, and I mean that in the best possible sense."
