"The flagship wine from Jean-Luc Thunevin and his partner, Murielle, the 2012 Valandraud is a classic St.-Emilion. Its opaque ruby/purple color is accompanied by notes of camphor, charcoal, black currants, black raspberries, chocolate and espresso. The oak, acidity and ripe tannin are all well-integrated. Another over-performer from this couple, it should drink nicely for 12-15 years."

"Now sporting its Premier Grand Cru Classe strip, the 2012 has a very controlled, focused bouquet with pure blackcurrant, cassis and boysenberry aromas that are well defined, perhaps less opulent than recent vintages. The palate is ripe and generous on the entry. The tannins gently grip the mouth and it rises to a suave, vanillary finish with plenty of ripe red berry fruit that will absorb the oak during its elevage. Sublime. Tasted April 2013."

"100 % Merlot. Also ein Ausnahme-Valandraud. Aktuelle Fläche; 8.8855 Hektar. Ertrag; 33 hl pro Hektar. Produktion; rund 20'000 Flaschen. Dies inklusive Zweitwein (Virginie de Valandraud) und Drittwein (3 de Valandraud). Extrem dunkles Purpur mit lila und violetten Reflexen. Geniales Bouquet, vielschichtig, viel schwarze Beeren und Damassinepflaumen, dunkle Edelhölzer, Rauch, Kaffee mit einer wunderschönen Süsse unterlegt, welche sich mit den Barriqueröstnoten vermischen. Konzentrierter Gaumen, intensive und doch sehr feine Tannine, jetzt Cassis und reife Brombeeren zeigend, dies in verschwenderischer Form. Das Ding pfeift und ist irgendwie Unvergleichlich mit dem Saint-Emilion- Rest! Valandraud ist nicht mehr auf dem Weg nach oben! Er ist mischt jetzt praktisch in Serie bei der obersten Kategorie mit. Also ein verdienter, neuer B-Premier-Grand- Cru. Murielle Thunevin ist es und gelungen den Power zu behalten und die Tannine zu verfeinern. Michel Bettane der bei unserer Probe zugegen war und dann auch mit uns auf Valandraud dinierte, monierte die momentan etwas zu starke Holzpräsenz. Ich fand aber, dass diese zum doch sehr eindrücklichen Potential passte. Ich degustierte den Wein ein zweites Mal auf Belgrave bei Dourthe ein paar Tage später. Und hatte keine Mühe, ihm nochmals die gleiche Punktezahl zu attestieren. Best Saint-Emilion 2012!"
