„The 2005 Pichon Baron has a dense ruby/purple color, sweet crème de cassis fruit, lots of cedar wood and forest floor, medium to full body, ripe tannin, and a long finish of a good 30+ seconds. This is a beauty and one of the most successful Pauillacs of this vintage. Drink it now through 2035.“

„The Château Pichon-Baron 2005 has a not dissimilar bouquet to the Pichon-Lalande with bright red and black fruit infused with cedar and violets, almost Margaux-like in character. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin: more masculine than Pichon-Lalande, you could almost say more rustic. Yet there is immense length and persistence here, real depth and vigour on the muscular finish. Yet I might just prefer the property over the road in this vintage.“

„Tasted single blind at Farr’s 2005 dinner in Hong Kong. This does not quite match the heady heights of Grand Puy Lacoste ’05, but Christian Seely has still overseen a magnificent Pauillac. There is mint and dark berried fruit on the nose, a seam of graphite that becomes more pronounced with continued aeration. The palate is full-bodied and “broader” that GPL, although it does not achieve the same ethereal sense of delineation.“

„Tasted single blind at Southwold. This does not quite have the same lift on the nose as the Les Forts or Carruades but with aeration I am certain it would have offered more. Aromas of macerated black cherries, boysenberry and a touch of graphite but always remaining tight. The palate has good depth, nice grip but not over-bearing. There is certainly a lot of unresolved new oak here and this certainly needs time with a slightly furry finish with notes of cedar and blackberry with just a touch of tar. Brooding intensity – one for the cellar (perhaps akin to the ’90?) Drink 2015-2030+.“

„As usual, this superb Pauillac possesses an inky/blue/black color in addition to a big, sweet nose of graphite, charcoal, burning embers, black currant liqueur, and toasty vanillin from new oak casks. Full-bodied with high but sweet, well-integrated tannins, the 2005 Pichon Baron is more backward than the blockbuster 2003 or prodigious 2000. Nevertheless, it is a superb effort whose power, length, and tannic structure suggest it should be at its peak between 2015-2035.“

„A blend of 63.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 33% Merlot, 2.3% Cabernet Franc and the rest Petit Verdot, this has a deep garnet colour. The nose is absolutely wonderful with blackberry, a hint of dark chocolate and vanilla pod, developing more cedar and graphite notes with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins, dense black fruits, vibrant with a touch of black pepper. It seems to be closing up, firm, stubborn and introverted on the finish. Great breeding here, improving on its barrel showing: a long-runner. Drink 2015-2030+.“

„A deep blue/purple color is followed by classic, sweet aromas of blueberries, creme de cassis, graphite, incense, spring flowers, and toasty vanillin from new oak. With full body and beautiful ripeness, purity, and depth, this atypically precocious 2005 will benefit from 6-8 years of bottle age, and last for 25-30 years. It is dramatically superior to its across the road neighbor, Pichon Lalande.“

„Yield of 35 hectoliters per hectare and a final blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, and 5% Cabernet Franc have produced a black/purple-colored 2005 boasting gorgeous intensity as well as sweet, classic creme de cassis notes interwoven with incense, camphor, and graphite. Powerful and full-bodied with abundant glycerin, high tannin, endearing freshness and sweetness, and a long, 45-second finish, this hefty (13.6% alcohol) Pauillac should be at its finest between 2012-2030+.“

„The nose is quite closed at first with blackberry and iodine. The palate is quite sumptuous with noticeable new oak (about the maximum I would like, though some opined it was a little too much.) Peppery, lush black fruits, very good weight, not quite as focused as Pichon-Lalande. A controlled, solid finish. Very fine.“
