Im Reigen der Premier Crus nimmt Châteaux Margaux die Sonderstellung der Idiosynkrasie der Trias Brillanz, Klarheit und Reinheit ein. Muß man als Verkoster, der immerhin auch Käufer und Distributeur ist, bei den anderen vier Premiers förmlich um einen Termin betteln, so wird man auf Château Margaux ungewöhnlich warmherzig und charmant empfangen. Dieser natürliche Umgang spiegelt sich auch in der größten Margaux-Verkörperung Margaux wieder: kein anderer Premier des Jahrgangs 2010 ist so distanzlos offen dem Verkoster gegenüber.

Verkostungsnotiz:

Der in brillantfarbenes Edelpurpur gefasste Margaux setzt schon in der Orchestrierung seiner olfaktorischen Ouvertüre Maßstäbe der Präzision, Distinktion und Balance. Auf dem schwebenden Fundament dunkelfruchtiger Beerigkeit setzen sich wohldosiert, immer im rechten Maß der Ausgewogenheit, steinfeuchte Mineralität, tänzelnder Veilchenduft, feine Edelholzwürze, Tabak und Lakritze in noblem Rollenspiel in Szene.
So als sei dieser Ausnahmewein jedweder Gravität enthoben, schwebt er beim Antrunk in schwereloser Anmut im Gaumen und hinterläßt doch Eindrücke höchsten intellektuellen wie sinnlichen Entzückens. The percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon in the final blend hit 90%, the balance Merlot and Cabernet Franc, and only 38% of the crop made it into the Chateau Margaux. Paul Pontallier, the administrator, told me that this wine has even higher levels of tannin than some other extraordinary vintages such as 2005, 2000, 1996, etc. Deep purple, pure and intense, with floral notes, tremendous opulence and palate presence, this is a wine of considerable nobility. With loads of blueberry, black currant and violet-infused fruit and a heady alcohol level above 13.5% (although that looks modest compared to several other first growths, particularly Chateau Latour and Chateau Haut-Brion), its beautifully sweet texture, ripe tannin, abundant depth and profound finish all make for another near-perfect wine that should age effortlessly for 30-40 years.“

„The Grand Vin is a blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and 1.5% each of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Bottled in late July, Paul Pontallier reminded me that the Grand Vin takes around six months before it settles down. Still, allowing several minutes aeration, it has a very intense bouquet of dark cherries, boysenberry, crushed stone and a hint of bay leaf that is beautifully defined, but as Paul mentioned, will need a months to blossom. The palate has a beguiling sense of symmetry: spine-tingling poise and tension. This is a magisterial Chateau Margaux with seamlessly integrated oak, pure dark berry fruit and an almost breathless, Burgundy-like purity on the satin textured finish. Utterly seductive, this is an incredible wine that will age for decades.“

"Paul Pontallier was rattling off some interesting statistics about Chateau Margaux. The 2000 (a great, great wine) was 13.1% natural alcohol, the 2005 13.1%, the 2009 13.2%, and the 2010, the highest ever measured, 13.5%. That is still nearly one degree less than the Pauillac first-growth of Chateau Latour at 14.4%. This blend of 90% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc (representing only 38% of the total production) has the classic, quintessential Margaux character of spring flowers, almost cool-climate precision, medium body, and a seamless integration of tannin, wood and alcohol. The blue and black fruit characteristics are present, and the wine restrained. The most measured and polished of all the first growths I tasted, it is also less concentrated than any of the other first growths, but the elegance is classic. The harvest finished on October 15, which was not their latest by any means. This is one of the few first growths of 2010 where the tannins are remarkably delicate and sweet, and the softness of this wine will provide magical drinking at a relatively early age, yet its balance and concentration will carry it for 20 or more years."

It takes a heartbeat to adjust, but then you start to see the beauty of a different style of 2010, a little more elegant, a little more sculpted, with concentration that sits deep in the body of the wine but builds more slowly through the palate. This shows the beauty of the appellation of Margaux in the way that you always want and hope the First Growths will - a signpost towards the rest, showing why they should be celebrated. Here are violet aromatics, soft black truffle flavours and silky, elongated tannins. Extremely good quality; fairly savoury berry fruits. As with all of these, there's a long long life ahead of it, and best to be put away for another five years at least."

"The 2010 Ch Margaux is amazingly dark purple. Very, very strongly Cabernet Sauvignon (90% of the blend - only 2006 matched it) with some light vegetation at first which opened out and mellowed to something utterly seductive in the glass. Dry and intense. Very rich on the front and amazingly supple – it smells as though it may be going to be a bit of brute but on the palate it is still so intense and polished initially but then it is clear that there are masses and masses of tannins. There is noble, fine, perfectly confident, minerally fruit that opens out on the palate. It is thinkable to drink this already!"

Only 38% of the harvest was included in the Grand Vin. The rest of the harvest was divided as follows. An equal portion of 38% went into Pavillon Rouge. The remaining wine was divided between their third and the new fourth wine. 210 marks what could be the lowest production ever recorded in Chateau Margaux. . Deep ruby on color, with an enticing perfume filled with smoke, cedar, cassis, violets, oak, tobacco, spice and black raspberries. But that’s not where the excitement is found. In the mouth, pure elegance, silk, satin and velvet, incredibly plush, refined, polished and long, this intensely pure Cabernet Sauvignon based wine remains on your palate for at least 60 seconds. 2010 Chateau Margaux exemplifies precision, purity, balance and elegance with a seamless finish. Everything is in balance with perfect harmony.“

Aérien dès l'entrée en bouche, très moelleux, le vin fond au palais assorti de mille douceurs au goût subtil et suave. Très bien installé en milieu de bouche, il évolue très lentement, toujours soyeux, profond, vers une longue finale au grain très raffiné. C'est superbe.“

Une quintessence de château Margaux.“

„Pourquoi château Margaux 2010 est-il un vin exceptionnel ? Avec ce millésime je retrouve le très grand nez de château Margaux, le plus parfumé et le plus subtil. Je ne l'avais pas ressenti aussi fort depuis le millésime 2000. Or, les années plutôt parfumées à châteaux Margaux sont d'habitudes des millésimes à la texture un peu austère auxquels il faut du temps pour s'exprimer (2006 par exemple). L'expérience prouve que dès que château Margaux sent les fruits noirs, sa texture sera celle d'un vin de rêve. 2010 combine ces deux bases essentielles à la détermination du caractère extraordinaire du lieu. En 2009, la texture de château Margaux a fait fureur chez nombre de critiques. Cependant, je ne lui ai pas donné la note maximale de par le léger effacement du nez. Avec le recul, il n'est pas impossible que les vendanges aient été un brin tardives. La nouvelle réception de vendanges par gravité ne pouvait jouer que le rôle d'un rehausseur des qualités tactiles de ce cru. Ainsi en 2010, la climatologie si favorable à la concentration aromatique se joint à la main de l'homme et au terroir pour créer cet extraordinaire résultat. Le nez est splendide, profond et complexe. En bouche une texture royale s'anime de la grâce des parfums ; le tout en puissance et en nuances. Notez encore que 2010 est le millésime qui contient le plus de cabernet sauvignon dans l'assemblage avec le 2006 : 90 %, plus 7 % de merlot, 1,5 % de cabernet franc, et 1,5 % de petit verdot. "This was phenomenal from barrel and remains so. The aromas are spellbinding. It smells like a bouquet of pink roses and then goes to currants, berries and citrus. Full body, with wonderfully refined tannins. It starts discretely and then grows to different levels and dimensions like a slow but big high tide. The texture is so beautiful. Try it in 2020 or beyond."

"2010 Margaux: 38 % Grand Vin. 90 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 7 % Merlot, 1,5 % Cabernet Franc und 1,5 % Petit Verdot. Leuchtendes Rubin-Purpur. Faszinierendes Bouquet voller Noblesse und parfümierter Süsse, Veilchen, Maulbeeren, Kirschen, Cassis und verschiedene Edelhölzer, leicht nussig im Untergrund, warmer Arabica-Kaffee-Touch, zarteste Kokosnoten. Samtig-seidiger Gaumenbeginn, eine berauschende Süsse in den Tanninen zeigend, parfümiert, mit einem Hauch Dörrbananen, Zedernholz, dominikanischem Tabak, komplexe, perfekte Adstringenz. Ein Château Margaux mit rekordverdächtigem Tannin, das aber locker integriert ist und dem überwältigenden Wein nichts von seinem seidigen Charme nimmt. Vielleicht ist das – in 109 Jahren – ja die Reinkarnation des legendären 1900ers? Paul Pontallier: «Langsam weiss ich nicht mehr, was ich den Besuchern erzählen soll. Beim Jahrgang 2009 erklärte ich, dass ich so etwas Grossartiges in den fast 30 Jahren auf Château Margaux noch nie erlebt habe. Und heuer glaube ich, dass der 2010er noch perfekter und noch grösser ist. Ich hoffe, man merkt das, wenn man die Fassmuster verkostet, sonst werde ich langsam unglaubwürdig."

"Reminding me slightly of the 1996 (and maybe the 2019) with its purity and precision, the 2010 Château Margaux offers a classic bouquet of red and black currants, green tobacco, sandalwood, spring flowers, and lead pencil shavings. Rich, full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated on the palate, with ripe tannin and integrated yet notable acidity, this is as classic and regal as Margaux gets, and while it has a terrific sweetness of fruit and ripeness to its tannins, it needs another 4-5 years to hit true prime time and is going to evolve for another 30 years or more."

"Eigentlich wollten wir mal ganz bewusst auf die Auszeichnung der Premiers Grands Crus Classés verzichten. Doch Château Margaux hat uns einen Strich durch die Rechnung gemacht. Was immer er auch kosten mag: Er verdient die Erwähnung als einer der grössten Weine des Jahres wie ein grosses Kunstwerk, das man auch nicht einfach ignorieren wird, nur weil man es sich nicht mehr leis ten kann. Umwerfende Nase von Blüten und Himbeere; beginnt dicht und elegant und frisch und geschmeidig, hallt endlos nach im Gaumen; saftig-feurigklassisch-unüblich-monumentaler, genia ler Wein, der den Verkoster froh macht, weil er beweist, dass grosse Terroirs auch heute noch ihre Geltung haben. 2020 bis 2050."
