„Served blind at the Southwold 2009 tasting. The Carbonnieux ‘09 has a well-defined bouquet that is floral and Margaux-like - light and feminine. The palate is medium-bodied with fresh crisp tannins and a polite, conservative finish that could do with more complexity. Perhaps this is at an awkward infant stage? I would afford this wine another three of four years in bottle.“

„A classic Pessac-Leognan, the 2009 Carbonnieux possesses aromas of sweet black currants and cherries intermixed with hints of roasted herbs, unsmoked cigar tobacco, charcoal and licorice. Medium to full-bodied with more concentration than many vintages, this surprisingly fleshy effort has more poundage and glycerin than this normally light-styled Bordeaux has offered in the past. Harmonious sweet tannins and low acidity give the wine a fleshy mouthfeel and immediate appeal, but most of its aromatic complexity will not emerge for another 5-7 years. It should keep for two decades or more.“

„Tasted at the Union de Grand Cru in London. The nose is a little anonymous compared to its peers, the palate a little pinched on the entry with firm tannins, but showing an agreeable sense of reserve and austerity that is unusual for the vintage. Not a wine that goes out and grabs you by the sense, but I like its style and hopefully the aromatics will improve with bottle age.“

„Soft, silky, incredibly sexy notes of licorice, tobacco leaf, cigar tobacco, cassis, and cherries soar from the glass of this full-bodied Carbonnieux, which seems to have a few extra layers of fruit, glycerin, and depth than usual. The wine has great fruit, purity, and lots of personality. Give it a couple of years of cellaring and drink it over the following 25+ years. (Tasted twice.) Bordeaux lost one of its favorite sons and a great gentleman, the former proprietor of Carbonnieux, Anthony Perrin. His son now manages the estate and must be proud of what he has achieved in 2009.“

„Tasted at a negociant. This has a very ripe nose that flirts with sur-maturite but pulls it back from the brink. Good definition: succulent black cherries, black plum and some glycerine. The palate is medium-bodied, fine tannins, very pure with good delineation, taut with minerality inflecting the black fruits on the off-dry, slightly brutish, tannic finish. I think this will soften nicely by the time of bottling and this represents good potential for the future.“
