Even better than the 1982, the profound 2003 Branaire Ducru boasts a saturated plum/purple color as well as an extraordinarily complex nose of black currants, blackberries, espresso roast, white chocolate, minerals, and truffles. It displays amazing freshness and definition for such a complex, complete, and full-bodied wine. A brilliant effort in the vintage, it will undoubtedly close down in several years and need more time, but perhaps its low acidity and huge, extravagant fruit-forwardness will keep it drinking well over the next two decades. A brilliant wine!“

This concentrated but low-acid St.-Julien should be delicious young yet age effortlessly for two decades. It is an impressive effort from proprietor Patrick Maroteaux, the president of the Unions des Grands Crus Classes. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2020.“

Medium to full-bodied, with well-integrated tannin, outstanding purity, a textured, plump, nicely layered mouthfeel, and low acidity, this 2003 is somewhat reminiscent of the property’s brilliant 1982. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020.“

„C'est une remarquable réussite. La couleur de ce vin se distingue par sa jeunesse. Qu'on le décante ou pas, le nez reste très fruité et puissant. Par contre, la bouche décantée est la meilleure. Le vin gagne en ampleur, ce qui est toujours favorable à Branaire. Il évolue gras, juteux, crémeux au toucher avec un goût inédit, difficile à décrire. Finale puissante, longue sur des tannins impeccables. C'est délicieux. On peut le goûter ou bien attendre.“

„Très belle couleur rouge sombre, intense et encore jeune. Nez remarquablement frais pour un 2003. Fin, fruité, il sent aussi la réglisse et la violette. Il possède la note pralinée du millésime, mais cette dernière est parfaitement compensée par la fraîcheur florale et fruitée. Entrée en bouche extrêmement séduisante. Le vin apparaît de suite dense, gras et pourtant très minutieux dans sa construction. Un superbe goût de cassis envahit la bouche et nous donne une incroyable fraîcheur. Conquérant au milieu du palais, le vin s’achève long, sans une once de tannin sec. Un délice de puissance. Ne pas se priver de le goûter dès maintenant .“

„En primeur, je lui trouvais une note vive que je ne comprenais pas. Aujourd'hui, elle a disparu et ce vin ne présente aucune austérité. Derrière sa très belle couleur, il sent la cerise, la vanille et conserve beaucoup de fraîcheur. Pulpeux en bouche, moelleux, plein de fruit, il s'achève long, sur des saveurs de prune et de réglisse. Une réussite.“

05: "Delikates, nussiges Bouquet, Brotkruste, feine Ledernoten und dominikanischer Tabak, ziemlich wuchtig im Ansatz. Fülliger Gaumen mit viel Stoff im Extrakt, pfeffriges Preiselbeerenspiel, verlangende Adstringenz, im Finale mit herrlichem, reifem Kirschenaroma bestückt, entwickelt sich prächtig. Der beste Branarie der neuen Zeit.
Mittleres Purpur mit rubinem Rand. Primär dunkles Röstaromen, darin einen feinen roten Kirschenton zeigend, hat seit der Fassprobe von der Nase her beeindruckend zugelegt. Mittelgewichtiger Gaumen, recht feine Tannine, noch sanft aufrauend in der Textur, gute Länge. Entwickelt sich sehr positiv. 08: Bei einem Diner auf Pontet Canet. Süss, eichig mit recht weichem Tannine, dezent trocken im noch mehligen Finale. Momentan liegt er wieder bei 17/20. Ich denke, dass er aber wieder zulegen wird."

09: "Direktes, sehr geradliniges Bouquet, Kirschentöne, Himbeeren, gut beschichtet. Stoffiger Gaumen dicht, fleischig Noten, kerniges Inneres, pfeffrig, noch etwas körnig, brauch einfach mehr Zeit als ich anfänglich vermutete."

10: "Dunkles Granat, recht satt in der Mitte, dezent ziegelroter Rand. Sehr intensives, schon fast wuchtiges (für einen Branaire) Bouquet, die Frucht wirkt etwas gekocht und zeigt rotes Pflaumenmus, Grenadine und helles Malz, darin eine würzige Rosenpfeffernote. Saftig-cremiger Gaumen, viel Schmelz in den Tanninen, Milchschoknoten von reifen Merlotschalen. Schon fast mit einer Prise Erotik ausgestattet. Wie lange wird er sich in dieser herrlichen Genussphase halten können?"
