Jeb Dunnuck:

"The 2012 Canon is a rich, smoky, meaty 2012 that checks in as blend of 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc. Ripe black cherries, melted licorice, chocolate, and a touch of scorched earth all emerge from this classic, structured effort that has terrific concentration, a pure, backward style, ripe tannin, and a great finish. It’s nowhere near ready for primetime (this wine didn’t start to open up until the second day after opening) and needs a solid 5-7 years of cellaring but will see its 30th birthday in fine form."

The Wine Advocate

"Tasted at a negociant tasting, the Canon ’12 has a perfumed, mineral-rich bouquet with vibrant red berry fruit that blossom in the glass. As usual, it is understated and refined. The palate is medium-bodied with very fine tannins, a silver thread of acidity and a rather masculine, structured finish that comes at somewhat of a surprise. This is a cerebral Canon that will repay cellaring. Excellent. Tasted April 2013."

"A dense ruby/purple color is followed by notes of black raspberries, blueberries, crushed rocks and spring flowers. This medium to full-bodied, well-endowed, authoritative Canon reveals some serious tannin in the finish, so 4-5 years of cellaring will be needed after bottling. It should last 15-20 years.

Owned by the Wertheimers (also the proprietors of the enormously successful haut-couture house of Chanel), this is a pure, stylish, nicely textured, impressive effort from a superb terroir on the limestone plateau of St.-Emilion. The final blend was 70% Merlot and 30% Cabernet Franc, and yields were a modest 35 hectoliters per hectare. "

"Beautifully poised wine. Fresh, elegant and perfumed on the nose. Juicy and fine on the palate. Delicate extraction. Fine, long tannins. 17.5/20pts ( 91/100pts) Drink: 2020 - 2030"

"Crushed stone, espresso, truffle and roasted plum create the already complex aromas. On the palate, the wine is soft, medium/full bodied with a sweet, spicy, elegant, finesse styled, soft, black cherry and thyme finish."

"Earth, stone, fresh red berries, medium bodied, soft and fresh, this is a forward style for Canon, making it one of the vintages tasters can enjoy young. 90-92 Pts"

Jean-Marc Quarin

Bonne longueur.

18/20 2017 - 2041

"Good bright red-ruby. Coffee and chocolate scents of new oak complement deep strawberry and dark cherry aromas on the brooding nose. On the palate, sweet cassis, black plum and mineral flavors are lifted by an element of peppery herbs. Finishes youthfully dry, with building tannins and suggestions of herbs, pepper and mint. Lovely balance and precision here: Canon has really turned the corner in the last several years."

"A very attractive deep rich red colour. On the attack, get good sweet fruits, feel the ripeness was achieved, but perhaps not quite to its limit, as the fruit dips in the mid palalte. Impressive oak regime which goes a long way to covering up the mid - palalte pause, there are some attractive smoky flourishes. This is well made, intelligent and restrained, but not quite up to the best vintages for this property. 86 - 88. 16 - 16.5. Recommended. Drink 2019 - 2030."
