The exquisite Clinet ’90 has a lovely rounded, gourmand bouquet, quite meaty and savoury, a touch of garrigues going on here, a little oxtail and Bovril, vibrant and completely seductive. A quintessential Pomerol ’90 bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with a lovely rounded, quite voluptuous texture, tight at first but unwinding nicely. Very focused, very well defined with just a touch of spice and cloves on the finish. Drink now-2020.“

„A sensational effort, and one of the two finest Clinets made before the 2008, this prodigious wine made by the late Jean-Michel Arcaute has always been a sprinter out of the gate. Even at age 19, it continues to strut its stuff. A dense blue/garnet/purple hue exhibits slight lightening at the edge, and the gorgeous nose offers up aromas of sweet blueberries, licorice, smoke, acacia flowers, and camphor. Full-bodied with silky tannins, low acidity, and terrific purity, this 1990 has hit its plateau of full maturity where it should remain for another decade.“

„Could the 1990 Clinet surpass the legendary 1989? Possibly so. A deep garnet core with very little maturation on the rim, almost opaque in the glass. The nose is imbued with brilliant definition with black berry, chestnuts, leather, hot bricks, black olives and a minerality not found on many 1990 Bordeaux . The full-bodied, plump palate is not over-bearing, yet powerful, tight, and tannic with blackberry, cassis, a touch of chestnut and a grainy texture on the finish. Harmonious and focused, this is a beautifully realized Clinet that is absolutely gorgeous.“

„More evolved than its world-famous sibling, the 1989, the 1990 continues to gain weight and stature every time I taste it. In a blind tasting, it is not easy to pick the difference between the younger, less evolved 1989 and the blockbuster 1990. The color is just starting to lighten a bit, but is still a saturated purple. Notes of smoke, chocolate, espresso, mocha, and blackberry and cassis liqueur jump from the glass of this full-bodied, splendidly aromatic, and prodigiously concentrated wine. It is compelling stuff.“

„It is easy to overlook the 1990 Clinet given the fact that 1989 merits a perfect rating. Nevertheless, the 1990 has improved with each tasting. It started life as an outstanding wine, although unfairly overshadowed by the massive 1989. The 1990 exhibits an opaque purple color, followed by a fabulous sweet nose of jammy black fruits, violets, minerals, and toasty oak. Full-bodied and rich, with fabulous purity, outstanding extract, and well-integrated acidity and tannin, this is a large-scaled, impressively-endowed claret that is narrowing the gap between itself and the legendary 1989. Anticipated maturity: 2000-2020. Ideally, both the 1989 and 1990 vintages will benefit from 4-5 years of cellaring.“

„Proprietor Jean-Michel Arcaute believes his 1990 might be superior to his 1989, but I cannot see that. The 1990's opaque dark ruby/purple color and spicy, oaky, floral, licorice, black-raspberry-scented nose are, however, top flight. In the mouth there is fine ripeness and a sense of elegance, but I do not find the mid-palate, or the depth and richness that the phenomenal 1989 possesses. It is probably unfair to compare any wine to Clinet's 1989. The 1990, which will also be bottled unfined and unfiltered nearly 10-12 months later than most other Bordeaux chateaux, may develop a phenomenal mid-palate richness (as the 1989 did) and thus merit a higher rating. Anticipated maturity: 1995-2005.“

But it is the full-bodied, opulent, sexy, ostentatious, fruit-filled, velvet-textured palate where this really rocks! Splash decanted and ready to go, I am sure that well-stored bottles can continue on this path for at least another 12-15 years. Today, this could be even better than the 1989!“

That is, if you're into opulent, sensuous, sexy, silk and velvet textures and a nose of truffle, flowers, fresh, juicy, sweet plums, cherry liqueur, dark chocolate and bit mint with a hint of coffee and Cuban Cigars. This bottle of elegant, hedonism was super in every way making it the perfect Valentines Day wine. It's probably at peak maturity today. Bought on release and decanted about 45 minutes, I suspect this will remain at this high level for at least another 10-15 or more years, if it has been well stored. Here's a tip for you, 2009 and 2010 are both better wines! If this sounds like your type of wine, both those stunners should be in your cellar.“

„Now we're talking! This is what great Pomerol is all about. Sexy, rich, sensuous textures with silky tannins. Lush, fresh, sweet, dark red berries with chocolate accents and truffle and a velvet finish that remains with you. This is clearly in the sweet spot for my taste. What a beauty!!! Interestingly, two bottles were popped. The first bottle, which is where this note was taken from, was a richer, more sensuous experience. The second bottle had more structure, was firmer and would probably age longer, but without as much pleasure. Both bottles came from the same case.“

„When the cork, I feared there might be a problem. Fortunately, the Durand came to rescue and flawlessly removed the cork. While the cork was in bad shape, the wine was a stunner! Chocolate covered black cherry, coconut, truffle and plums were all over the place. The wine is dense, intense, thick, rich and silky, ending in lush waves of juicy, ripe, sweet, pure, plums. Popped into a decanted and poured, the wine got better in the glass. If you are a Pomerol fan, if you can find a bottle, grab it. This is a treat.“

"Couleur rouge sombre. Intensité moyenne. Nez d'intensité moyenne. Fruité. Boisé avec un type oxydatif rappelant l'Espagne. Note affirmée de bois. Crémeux à l'agitation. Attaque douce se développant sur une structure assez grasse et de corps moyen, qui évolue assez crémeuse, sur des tanins fondus et assez gras dans la première approche, qui finissent sur une saveur boisée et un goût assez chaleureux."

"Mehrere Male degustiert: Ein schwarzer, dichter Wein mit einer grossen Zukunft. Reife Beeren in der Nase; Brombeeren, Cassis- und feine Lakritzennote, fett. Im Gaumen samtig, feine Struktur, Fruchtschalenextrakt, gut stützendes Fett, sehr gut balanciert. Arrivage (18/20): Süsses Bouquet mit starkem Toastton, der im Moment dominiert. Beeriger Gaumen; Hagebutten, marmeladige Frucht, feinsandiger Fluss, auf der Zunge zeigt sich ein leicht aufrauhender Holztouch von der Barrique (zu lange im Fass?), wirkt burgundisch, moderner Wein, mittlere Länge durch eher niedrige Säure. Steht hinter seinem gigantischen 89er. Noch immer verschlossen im Jahr 1996: Süsses, kompottartiges Bouquet; Zwetschgenmarmelade, Pflaumen- und burgundische Dörrfrüchtenoten. Im Gaumen ebenfalls burgundisch, viel Rundungen, weiche Tannine. Ein sehr fetter Wein, der im Fluss noch sandig wirkt und eine feine Bitternote darin zeigt. In einer Serie einmal mit 18/20 und dann blind in einer späteren Serie mit 20/20 Punkten bewertet. Den anderen Mitdegustatoren ging es ebenfalls so, dass die zweite Flasche rund zwei Punkte höher dotiert wurde. Gibt es unterschiedliche Flaschen? Volles, beeriges Bouquet; Himbeerspuren, viel Frucht, pfeffrig und intensiv. Im Gaumen fest, konzentriert, viel Stoff, wirkt in der Adstringenz noch leicht kernig, was ihm jetzt etwas an Konsumspass nimmt, langer, stark rotbeeriger Nachhall (Himbeerkerne)."

"Wurde mir in München um Mitternacht blind serviert: Extrem tiefe Farbe. Ein enorm konzentriertes Hammerbouquet; schwarze Pfefferkörner, Gewürznelken, Waldhimbeeren, exotische Hölzer, Rauchspuren. Im Gaumen fest, kernig, auch nach zehn Jahren immer noch blockiert und Null Charme. Einerseits handelt es sich um ein riesiges Pomerol-Ding, andererseits kommt die Frage auf, ob er sich je eine Pomerol-Fettfülle erarbeiten wird? Warum ist dieser 90er noch so blockiert jung und der damals gigantische 1989er fängt bereits zu oxydieren an? Das Potential ist riesig, er wird aber immer ein Pomerol mit Schwarzenegger-Affinität abgeben."

"Sehr viel leuchtendes Rot zeigend, deutlicher Wasserrand. Wuchtiges Bouquet, ein Hauch Port und Curry, getrocknetes Lorbeerblatt. Mehr Nase als Gaumen, im Extrakt gezehrt, so irgendwie unlogisch jung-alt und mit sprödem Finale. Die Harmonie fehlt gänzlich."
