"Tasted at the Pontet-Canet vertical in London, the 1999 Château Pontet-Canet put in a respectable showing and demonstrated more class than either the 1996 or1982. Well-defined on the nose, there is a satisfying delivery of blackberry and blueberry fruit infused with dried blood and incense as it moves into its secondary stage. The palate is medium-bodied with classic tobacco-infused black fruit. There is nice salinity here, not a complex Pauillac by any stretch of the imagination, although there is impressive precision on the conservative finish. Probably at its peak now, the 1999 Pontet-Canet is a wine that never had lofty ambitions, but a wine that I would welcome on my table."

Slightly on the lean side, with some green in the finish, produced from a blend of 61% Cabernet Sauvignon, 34% Merlot and 5% Cabernet Franc, this is close to fully mature and should be enjoyed sooner than later."

"Couleur rouge sombre. Bonne intensité. Belle. Nez d'intensité moyenne. Fruité. Note fumée de cabernet sauvignon. Sous-bois. Fumé. Frais. Très beau. On ne peut pas imaginer un 1999 dans cette affaire. Touche de feuille morte à l'agitation. Cassis. Ce vin est très bon mais varie dans sa structure vis-à-vis des autres. Le vin offre sa similitude aromatique assez personnalisée (cassis, cèdre, chêne, sous-bois), puis un corps arrondi, fondant, un peu moins tramé en milieu de bouche mais savoureux, sans rudesse et long. Beau vin. Il suffit d'attendre. Une belle surprise."

Intensives Cassis- und Rauchbouquet, dunkle Schokonoten, Brombeeren und Lakritze, wirkt erstaunlich dicht. Fester Gaumen, satte Adstringenz, rot- und blaubeeriges Spiel, zeigt ein grosses Potential, sanft kerniger Nachhall. (17/20).

07:

Aufhellendes Granat, mittlere Tiefe in der Mitte. Beginnt relativ trocken, mit blauem Beerentouch, dunkle Pilze und Anklänge von Edelhölzern. Recht fester, muskulöser Gaumen, zeigt Rückhalt und brauch von den Gerbstoffen her noch etwas Zeit. Weist etwas mehr Gerbstoffe wie Körper auf.

Im Rahmen einer Bordeauxofferte seriös degustiert. Der Wein ist eigentlich gereift und hat erste, tertiäre Aromen, aber die Gerbstoffe sind irgendwie stehen geblieben und entwickeln sich einfach nicht. So ist der Wein kräftig und sperrig mit wenig Charme.

Brombeer, Heidelbeeren und Lakritze, also erstaunlich blaubeerig und mit einer wunderschön fruchtigen Note, aber leider auch mit einer gewissen Strenge versehen. Vielleicht wurde der Wein etwas zu streng erzogen für den Jahrgang.

Erdig mit dunklen Pilznoten, recht gute Säure, beim Essen - auf dem Château - legte er noch ein bisschen zu.

10:

Die Flasche letztes Jarh war wohl nicht ganz sauber. Jetzt ist es ein Médoc mit einem Körpergeewicht eines Saint Julien, den Tanninen eines Saint Estèphes und dem Geschmack eines Pauillacs. Jetzt in Topform."

"The 1999 Pontet-Canet has long been a favorite vintage of mine. At the time, the vineyard was in better shape than it had been, according to Jean-Michel Comme, though organic/biodynamic viticulture had not yet been introduced. The bouquet is very well defined and focused, offering blackberry, cedar and a hint of pine forest gently unfolding. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, a fine bead of acidity, plenty of black fruit and fine grip. There is a greater sense of rondeur compared to young bottles that I encountered, and touches of white pepper and clove appear toward the satisfyingly persistent finish. One of the best Pauillacs of this vintage. Tasted from an ex-château bottle at the estate."
