The Wine Advocate

"Two consulting oenologists with different philosophies work together at Clos Fourtet. Since Stephane Derenoncourt, a late harvester, and Jean-Claude Barrouet, a much earlier harvester, have joined forces, the results have been exhilarating. This 50-acre vineyard high on the plateau, owned by the Cuvelier family and managed by Tony Balu, had yields of 33 hectoliters per hectare. The 2011, one of the stars of the vintage, is a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc. Its opaque purple color is accompanied by notes of graphite, truffles, blackberries and blueberries. Rich and medium to full-bodied with good acidity, sweet, well-integrated tannin and a hint of forest floor, this big, fleshy St.-Emilion should drink well for two decades."

Decanter Magazine

"Crimson hue. Attractive fruit on the nose. Fresh palate with a fine, firm structure. A well-crafted wine minus the depth and intensity of the last three years."

Jeff Leve

"Coffee, black cherry, minerality, black raspberry liqueur with rich, silky, opulent textures, deep color and a long sensuous mouth feel are found in the wine. From a blend of 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Cabernet Franc, the wine will be aged in 60% new oak. Licorice, sweet blackberry, jam, truffle, chocolate, floral and black cherry aromas are found in the aromatics. Very rich for the vintage, the wine is packed with sweet, ripe, juicy and luscious dark berries. Balanced and supple, there is a lot to like about this wine."

VINOUS

"Bright, deep ruby. Black cherry, blackcurrant, road tar, espresso and exotic oak spices on the brooding nose. Enters the mouth supple and pliant, with dark cherry and sweet spice flavors, but a strong tannic core gives the wine considerable structure and weight. Sound acidity lifts the cocoa note on the long back end, with the new oak sweetening but not overwhelming the wine's fruit. Needs time. Stephane Derenoncourt began collaborating here in 2001 ("I should probably have cut back on the use of new oak sooner," he admitted), and he's very happy with the 2011."
