The Wine Advocate

"A final blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot from the Frey family, the 2005 is a gorgeous La Lagune, and one of the first great ones under the Frey administration. This wine has a dense ruby/purple color, a beautiful nose of sandalwood, black raspberries, and cassis, silky sweet tannin, medium to full body, and a textured, long, pure mouthfeel and finish. This wine is probably 3-4 years away from prime-time drinking, but it should evolve gorgeously for another 20-25 years."

Robert Parker 94 Punkte (Jun. 2015)

"This is the finest wine made at this estate since 1982, and possibly the greatest La Lagune of all time. Its dense ruby/purple color is followed by an exquisite bouquet of spice box, incense, sweet unsmoked cigar tobacco, black cherry liqueur, forest floor, and subtle toasty oak. Reminiscent of a Cote de Nuits grand cru blended with a top-notch Bordeaux, this beauty possesses silky tannins, a broad, savory, expansive mouthfeel, and intrinsic precision as well as elegance. Moreover, this fabulous wine is a relative bargain for the vintage. Seamless and prodigious! "

Jancis Robinson

"Fragrance and some lift. Lively and almost more like a Margaux than some Margaux. Solid finish with some ripe tannins that need resolution. Very much a vintage expression."

Jancis Robinson MW 17-/20 (Dez. 2007)

"Dark crimson. Solid and layered. Lots of chew and substance but great harmony and classic reverberation on the palate. Just a slightly sour note on the finish stops me from giving an even higher score."

Jeff Leve

"Tobacco, cedar, black raspberry, licorice and smoke, the wine is a medium/full bodied, silky, fresh, vibrant, lively, wine of finesse, lushness and elegance. The wine was made from a blend of 55% Cabernet Sauvginon, 35% Merlot and 10% Petit Verdot. I have been following this beauty since it was initially produced and this is the best showing yet. Due to its elegant, silky nature, you can drink this today. But I'm willing to bet that another 5 more years of rest will add more depth, complexity and nuances to the wine."

94 Punkte (Sep. 2021)

"If they were giving out awards for the most elegant wine in the Haut Medoc, La Lagune would step up to the podium and give their acceptance speech. The wine is not about depth of color, tannin or concentration, it's about balance, elegance and a fair price. It reminds me of a Margaux, which it should as it's located next door. With a black raspberry, spice, earth and dark cherry nose, this charming wine opens to soft tannins and round textures. This wine will drink well young, yet it should age for 25-years."

Jean-Marc Quarin

"Très beau rouge pourpre, sombre. Intense.

VINOUS

"The 2005 La Lagune has an attractive bouquet with plenty of blackberry, raspberry, minerals and dried flowers, the oak neatly integrated. This blossoms nicely in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with fine but firm tannin, just a little chewiness on the front end but considerable weight and concentration at the back. Like many 2005s there is a solid backbone to this wine, to wit, a La Lagune built for long-term ageing. There is firm grip on the finish and as such it needs another two or three years in bottle. Tasted at the La Lagune vertical at the château."

Neal Martin 92 Punkte (Apr. 2018)

"Bright ruby-red. Aromas and flavors of currant, mocha, tobacco and smoke, complemented by sweet, nutty oak. Lush, sweet and seamless; quite full for La Lagune. This generous, impressively concentrated wine finishes with sweet tannins, a whiplash of flavor and real mouthcoating breadth. I underrated this two years ago."
