The Wine Advocate

"Still one of the most backward wines of the vintage, Leoville-Barton’s 1982 is a wine of huge extract, high tannin, and a somewhat ancient style that recalls some of the Bordeaux of the late forties. The color is still a dense, even murky, opaque ruby/garnet. The wine offers up notes of licorice, cedar, black truffles, and sweet currant fruit. I had the wine twice in 2002, and my tasting note was almost identical to the last time I had it, in 1997, showing just how slowly this wine is evolving. The wine is enormous in the mouth, but still has some rather gritty, high tannins. It is a classic St.-Julien, with meat and black currants, great structure, and an amazingly youthful, vigorous feel. I would not touch a bottle for another 5-6 years. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2035."

Robert Parker 94 Punkte (Jan. 2003)

"This traditionally made, old style, extremely dense, powerful wine requires another 7-10 years of cellaring. An opaque dark garnet color is followed by aromas of sweet cedar, old wood, truffles, smoke, and underbrush. Big, thick, juicy, black currant, and cherry flavors can be found in this muscular, monster-sized, exceedingly tannic, dense, backward wine. Immensely impressive for its size, strength, and structure, this 1982 requires another 5-10 years of cellaring. It is unquestionably one of the most concentrated wines of the Medoc, and it should last another 30-40 years. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2050."

Robert Parker 92 Punkte (Jun. 2000)

"One of the most traditionally-styled wines of the vintage, this wine is a throw-back to the old, rough and tumble style of Bordeaux, with high tannin, huge extract, and an impenetrable personality. The wine has not budged in evolution since bottling. The color remains a murky, opaque purple/garnet. The nose offers up aromas of cedar, licorice, spices, black truffles, and sweet, ripe fruit. Very unformed and unevolved, this full-bodied, tannic, intensely concentrated wine is thick and rich, but oh, so backward. In many respects this is a classic St.-Julien meant to be held for another 10-20 years before consumption. It should prove to be one of the great Leoville-Barton's, but it has more in common with a 1975 in terms of its glacial pace of development than with most 1982s. Tasted 7 times since bottling with consistent notes."

Robert Parker 93 Punkte (Dez. 1995)

"The 1982 may prove to be the best Leoville-Barton made in the last 30 years. It is very concentrated as well as extremely backward and tannic. Given the wine's massive concentration, power, and body, it will not be ready to drink until the end of this decade. It has beautifully balanced oak, acidity, tannin, and ripe, red currant fruit. The bouquet is starting to emerge, but this wine remains a closed blockbuster example of the vintage. The late Ronald Barton claimed this was the greatest wine he made - what praise!"
