The Wine Advocate

„The 2019 Clinet is showing beautifully in bottle, wafting from the glass with aromas of plums, cherries and berries mingled with hints of violets, licorice, subtle spices and smoke. Full-bodied, sensual and velvety, it's seamless and vibrant, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a long, resonant finish. This precise, concentrated wine is the finest young Clinet I've ever tasted, and it exemplifies the tremendous progress that Ronan Laborde has made at this estate over the last decade.“

William Kelley 97 Punkte (Apr. 2022)

Ronan Laborde is producing the best wines of his career at this Pomerol reference point. Some eight hectares produce Clinet, much of the vineyards being located around the château in the lieu-dit that lends it its name, complemented by a parcel by the church and another not far from the headquarters of the syndicat viticole. Today, these holdings are planted with some 80% Merlot, but before phylloxera, Cabernet Sauvignon was widely planted in this sector, and today, Laborde is replacing Merlot with Cabernet Sauvignon (he retains a parcel of old-vine Cabernet Sauvignon dating back to 1950). Vines are hedged at 1.5 meters, and cover crops help to manage water in the iron-rich clays near the château, allowing access by tractor even after recent rainfall. In the winery, Laborde now employs small stainless steel tanks that permit parcel-by-parcel vinification, and a vertical press has been the order of the day since as long ago as 2001. What's really evolved in recent years is the barrel program: oak is long-seasoned (4-5 years), and some large formats have joined the classic 225-liter barriques; but above all, lighter, less impactful toasts are now chosen, meaning Clinet's 80% new oak is much more discreet in its aromatic and textural contribution than was the case a decade ago. Laborde's 2018 turned out brilliantly in that warm, dry vintage, and the 2019 looks to be even better.

„The 2019 Clinet is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, harvested from the 23rd of September to the 3rd of October. The alcohol weighed in at 14.5%. It is aging in French oak barriques, 75% new, using the OXOLINE system in order to minimize stirring. It is expected to age in barrels for 16 months. Opaque purple-black colored, it bursts from the glass with bold scents of ripe black plums, blackberry pie and blueberry compote with an undercurrent of redcurrant jelly, raspberry preserves, licorice, molten chocolate and cardamom with a fragrant waft of red roses. The palate is rich, full-bodied and fantastically opulent, with layers of exotic spices emerging among all the black fruit preserves flavors, framed by velvety tannins and just enough freshness, finishing long and hedonic.“

Decanter Magazine

"Seductive and appealing blend of rich coffee and chocolate alongside pulsing cassis and bilberry fruits. Great quality Clinet, extremely well expressed with controlled ripe fruits and firm tannins that provide a pretty strict frame at this point. This is a high percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon for a Pomerol wine, and it gives characteristic poise and balance. A yield of 38hl/ha. 75% new oak."

"80% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Sauvignon. Barrel sample.
Purple-black hue. Concentrated cassis aroma, almost like a fruit liqueur. Palate more subdued but the fruit is generous and there’s plenty of zest and drive. Tannins and oak integrated. Clean, long finish."

Jeff Leve

„This was so good in the barrel, it is hard to believe that the wine improved from there. But isn't that what all great wines are supposed to do? Inky dark in color, the wine is equally dark on the palate with all of its decadently rich, sensually textured layers of black cherries, blackberries, black plums, and chocolate. The perfume, with its flowers, cocoa, espresso, licorice and truffle is off the hook! The finish, with its mild, salted endnote sticks with you for close to 60 seconds as it builds and expands, offering a fruit-drenched, hedonistic, non-stop thrill ride. Clearly, this is one of the best vintages of Clinet that Ronan Laborde has produced. Fans of the estate should be all over this because sooner rather than later prices can only rise from here! Drink from 2030-2055.“

This is my second time tasting this stunner. The additional month in the barrel has added more sensual textures, finesse and floral characteristics. Opulent, silky, refined and vibrant, there is a gorgeous sense of vibrancy in the fruit that provides more energy and complexity to all those ripe black cherries and plums all coated in licorice and dark chocolate. The wine is opulent, sexy and showy, as well as elegant and age-worthy. Give this seductive gem at least a decade in the cellar, and perhaps longer and enjoy the thrills for 2-3 decades after that.“

Dark garnet in hue, the truffle, tobacco, smoke, licorice, spice, flower, plum and chocolate aromas work here. But it is on the palate where the wine really rocks. Sultry, rich, opulent, full-bodied, deep and ostentatious, this is incredibly sexy. The layers of velvet-textured, perfectly ripe, sweet, fleshy fruit, with its mineral-driven, salty tannins and dark cocoa covered fruit in the finish lingers and expands. The wine is a blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon reaching 14.5% alcohol with pH of 3.75. The harvest took place September 18 to September 26.“

VINOUS

"The 2019 Clinet is just so fragrant on the nose: black and red fruit vying for attention, iris and incense, touches of truffle in the background. The purity that Ronan Laborde and his team have achieved should be applauded. The palate is medium-bodied with saturated tannins, perfect acidity, brilliant focus and a killer sense of tension on the finish. This is a stunning Clinet, the best that I have encountered in barrel over 20 years of tasting. That creamy texture takes your breath away. Up there with the very best - a Clinet that rivets you to the spot."
