The Wine Advocate

"A blend of 49% Merlot and 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, the Palmer 2013 certainly has more fruit intensity on the nose compared to the Alter Ego. A little more opulent, there is a sense of plushness typical of Palmer with oodles of black cherries, cassis and blueberries - hints of dried violet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins. The acidity is nicely judged with a fine masculine, swarthy finish that shows more length than the Alter Ego. This is a good effort from the Palmer team - what you might call a "swish" Margaux in the making. Tasted April 2014."

"Forest floor aromas are coupled with truffle and black plum in this soft, round wine. Featuring plenty of finesse, the wine ends with polished, fresh black raspberries and a little bit of dust in the finish. This wine is about elegance and purity of fruit. For tasters that feel 2009 and 2010 were too much, this is your year. From 51% Cabernet Sauvignon and 49% Merlot, the wine reached 13% alcohol and will be aged in 55% new French oak barrels. With yields of 25 hectoliters per hectare, only 33% of the wine was used for the Grand Vin. 2013 is the last vintage not to be farmed 100% Biodynamically. Starting in 2014, everything will be 100% Biodynamic. According to Thomas Duroux, with 2013, the biodynamic farming helped balance the vintage. Without it, 2013 would have been much more challenging. The property will property will produce a 2013 historical blend."

"95–97Pts. Barrel Sample. This is a complex, structured, smoothly textured wine. It has more power and density than many wines in the vintage, with blackberry and black currant fruit coming through strongly. The result is a wine that’s balanced and structured. This is for long-term aging."

VINOUS

"Dark red cherries, plums, licorice, menthol and smoke all meld together in the 2013 Nenin. An attractive, mid-weight red, the 2013 offers good depth, balance and silkiness. Sweet, floral overtones emerge on the expressive finish."

"Dunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, breitere Randaufhellung, feines Heidelbeerkonfit, reife Kirschen, zarte Gewürzanklänge, Edelholztouch, ein Hauch von Nougat. Rotbeerig, frische Kirschen, präsente Tannine, blättrige Nuancen im Abgang, rassig strukturiert, salziger Nachhall, zitronig im Rückgeschmack."

Falstaff

"3,6ph, a little lower than normal meaning less violet-blue colour and more red, with a blend of 51% cabernet, 49% merlot. This is one of those interesting anomalies in 2013, as right next door at Chateau Margaux they were not able to use any merlot in their first wine (Duroux says that they have the merlot on gravel at Palmer, so it got ripe, and that Palmer without merlot would not be Palmer). The tannins here are very silky, great poise on the fruits. Fermentation 27-28 degrees c. During maceration started it at 25, then let it naturally slip down to 20/21. Between two- four weeks maceration. Next year, 2014, will be 100% biodynamic, and by 2017 they hope to be fully certified in both organic and biodynamic. Real purity of fruit. Highly recommended. Drink 2022-2038."
