"The 1996 Leoville-Las Cases is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot and 16% Cabernet Franc picked between 25 September and 10 October (for fascinating insight, read Robert Parker's remarks about the blend with Michel Delon in the original tasting note). Now at 20 years, it has evolved into an absolutely stunning Saint Julien, clearly one of the best wines from the estate this decade. The bouquet is beautifully defined with intense black cherries, cedar, mint and a touch of oyster shell that seems to gain intensity in the glass. The palate is seamless from start to finish, extraordinarily pure, the 70% new oak totally assimilated of course, impressive weight and power allied with genuine finesse and tension towards the silky smooth finish. It stands as one of the best wines of the vintage without one iota of doubt and it will last 30-40 years without problem. You might call it "proper Claret." You might call it "delicious." Tasted July 2016."

"Having previously rated it nearly perfect, I was apprehensive of a letdown about tasting the 1996 Leoville Las Cases once it had been bottled, but that concern was quickly dismissed once I put my nose in the glass. A profound Leoville Las Cases, it is one of the great modern day wines of Bordeaux. This wine's hallmark remains a sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of the Cabernet Sauvignon grape. Yet the wine has retained its intrinsic classicism, symmetry, and profound potential for complexity and elegance. The black/purple color is followed by a spectacular nose of cassis, cherry liqueur, pain grille, and minerals. It is powerful and rich on the attack, with beautifully integrated tannin, massive concentration, yet no hint of heaviness or disjointedness. As this wine sits in the glass it grows in stature and richness. It is a remarkable, seamless, palate-staining, and extraordinarily elegant wine - the quintessential St.-Julien. Despite the sweetness of the tannin, I would recommend cellaring this wine for 7-8 years. Anticipated maturity: 2007-2035."

"My tasting notes for this wine begin with the following words "wow, wow, wow!" I had been looking forward to retasting this 1996 since I had it in spring, 1997, and I was not disappointed by its evolution. The wine possesses an opaque purple color, and an attention-getting, staggering, sweet nose that offers the essence of black currant fruit, kirsch, and minerals as well as the essence of Leoville-Las-Cases's personality. It is fabulously concentrated, with the sur-maturite (over-ripeness) of Cabernet Sauvignon, one of the wine's most undeniable hallmarks. When measured, the tannin level is extremely high, but you would never know that when tasting this wine because of the massive amount of extract, purity, and virtually perfect equilibrium. Despite its rare combination of unbridled power and complexity, this wine has beaucoup de finesse, as well as a finish that lasts close to 45 seconds. A candidate for a perfect rating, it is a modern day legend in the making. Will it surpass the 1986 and 1982? Time will tell. Only 40% of the total harvest was used in the 1996, with the final blend containing a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet Sauvignon than usual. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2030."

If you have 4 hours of decanting time available, this is a stunning bottle of LLC. It's rich, concentrated, mouth filling, long, intense and packed with character. The wine is powerful, yet not over overwhelming. The fruit is ripe, and tannins and polished, but firm. This finish must last close to 50 seconds. With another decade, this could easily hit 100 Pts.

First Growth in quality is the first and most accurate descriptor that comes to mind. Power, precision, finesse, purity of fruit, coupled with a regal quality to the tannins, textures and fruit are what you'll find. Concentrated, but not the least bit heavy, this is a stunner. Perhaps the wine was decanted about 20 minutes before serving. This is just sublime! If you want to experience Leoville Las Cases at its best, this is the vintage to open today.

God, this is off the hook! Popped and poured, which you would think is a crime against wine, I was shocked at how fabulous this was to taste. Intensity and concentration, with a depth of flavor miles long, the level of tannin is high, but the tannins are refined, ripe, and long. The wine is fresh, balanced and really coats your taste buds. You can pop a cork today and enjoy the ride, 2 hours of air is suggested. or, wait another decade. Either way, you'll enjoy this stunner. A great vintage of Leoville Las Cases that will mature in my lifetime, who would have thunk it? If y want to know what Leoville Las Cases is all about, this could be the vintage to buy.

"Edles, parfümiertes Cabernet-Bouquet, Heidelbeeren, Brombeeren, konzentriert und völlig geradlinig. Im Gaumen ein Ausbund von Extraktsüsse und reifen Tanninen, trotz noch stützender, gaumenumfassender Adstringenz fast samtig, schwarze Kirschen und Brombeeren im langen, königlichen Finale. Einer der allerbesten Weine des Jahrganges, der in seiner Genussphase ganz sicher noch einen Punkt zulegt."

00: "An der grossen Las-Cases-Probe in Linz blind verkostet: Sattes Purpur-Rubin. Rauchiges, sehr Cabernet-lastiges Bouquet, viel schwarze Beeren, ein Hauch Eucalyptus, sehr konzentriert mit gewaltigem Nasenpotential. Im Gaumen feine Schokonoten, Dörrfrüchte, viel Schmelz und Fülle, tolle Frucht im Nachklang. Grosser Las-Cases mit Sex-Appeal (19/20)."

Graziler, seidiger Gaumen, feiner Stoff, elegante Adstringenz, viel Maulbeeren, dunkle Edelhölzer, Kakaonoten, beim Schlürfen zeigt sich eine enormes Terroirparfüm in Form von Rauch und Korinthen, essenzhafte Beerigkeit, gebündeltes, extrem langes Finale. Kann die Maximalwertung erreichen, wenn er all seine Chancen nutzt (19/20). Im März 2005 bei einem Nachtessen mit Ueli Eggenberger und Lenz Moser getrunken. War zwar noch jung aber durch seine delikate Art und seinem berauschenden Parfüm jetzt schon ein herrlicher Genuss (19/20). Im August 2005 öffnete Martin Merz eine Flasche. Obwohl der Wein eigentlich noch zu jung ist, scheint er momentan recht zugänglich zu sein. Oder ist er so schön zu trinken, weil die Tannine so extrem fein sind und eine faszinierende Süsse in sich tragen. Egal was – jeder Schluck ist ein berauschender Genuss. (19/20)."

09: "Dunkles Granat immer noch lila Schimmer. Tolles Würzbouquet, viel Zedern, Tabak, feine Stallnoten, Korinthen, Rauch, Trüffel. Im Gaumen fest, fleischig, zeigt Muskeln und wirkt so etwas asketisch, ja vielleicht etwas arrogant. Und gerade diese Kraft und Arroganz verleihen ihm sehr viel Eigencharakter, dieser Kraftbündel ist gepaart mit einer berauschenden Süsse und zeigt sich erstmals so richtig genial. (19/20)."

10: "Nach einer gewaltigen Altweinprobe bei René Schmidlin in Javea (Spanien) war dieser sonst recht charmant anzugehende Las Cases relativ hart. Wir tranken nicht alles aus und ich nahm eine angebrochene Flasche ins Ferienhaus. Am anderen Tag passte es dann ganz hervorragend. (19/20)."

11: "Mitteldunkel, deutlich aufhellend. Viel Kirschentöne, dezent vanillig, Kokosnoten von Allier-Eiche. Im Gaumen saftig mit gut stützender, integrierter Säure die dem Körper aber eine schöne Rasse verleiht, hat erstaunlich viel Primärfrucht erhalten können und kommt, trotz vielleicht allererster Genussreife, noch recht jung daher. 13: "Mitteldunkel immer noch rote Reflexe. Würzige Cabernetspuren, schwarze Kirschen und rotes bis blaues Cassis, herrliche Kaffeenoten, gibt viel mehr von sich als der stumme 95er im Glas links davon. Dichter Gaumen, komplex, zeigt Fülle und ersten Charme, gewaltig viel Druck im langen Finale. Bald in erster Reife. Das wird ein ganz grosser Las-Cases!"

"Deep saturated ruby. Quintessential Medoc perfume: black cherry, cassis, violet, minerals, leather, cedar and roasted nuts. Large-scaled and thick, with a texture that truly three-dimensional. Powerful structure gives the wine an extraordinary solidity. Sweet, supple and impressively deep. Tasted alongside the '95, the '96 came across as more refined and considerably more minerally, with the tannins hitting the palate later. Superb claret."
