The Wine Advocate

"In comparison to the more open-knit, flattering style of the 1993, the 1994 is a backward, less precocious, more tannic wine that needs another 5-7 years of cellaring. It is a wine that recalls the style of the more tannic vintages of the sixties and seventies. The healthy dark ruby/purple color is followed by copious quantities of smoky, toasty, new oak. There is an impression of ripe fruit, but, for now, the wine's personality remains dominated by excruciatingly strong tannin. Give this wine 5-6 years of cellaring, as patience is definitely a requirement for purchasing the 1994 Lagrange. It should last for 15-20 years."

"Lagrange's 1994 revealed one of the weaknesses possessed by some Medocs. The color is a deep ruby/purple, and the nose offers up plenty of toasty new oak and moderate quantities of ripe fruit, but in the mouth, once past the attack, the wine is slightly deficient, as if someone had shot a hole through it. The finish possesses plenty of tannin, alcohol, wood, and fruit, but the empty center is a problem. I had more positive notes on this wine last year, so perhaps it is going through an ungracious period.
All of the wines in this segment were tasted between March 19 and March 28 in Bordeaux. Most of the important wines from both the 1994 and 1995 vintages were tasted three separate times during my ten-day stay in Bordeaux."

"This opaque purple-colored wine offers up a sweet, smoky, oaky nose, followed by thick, rich, chewy blackcurrant flavors, full body, high tannin, and low acidity. An intense, powerful wine that has been lavishly oaked, the 1994 Lagrange should age well for 15-25 years."

VINOUS

"Dark garnet colour. Soft red berries on the nose with fleshy palate showing an unanticipated bit of "sur-maturite" on the palate. Balanced with good length. A succulent, successful Lagrange 1994, still just a bit backward but just starting to develop. Recommended given the vintage and like the 1997, a perfect "restaurant" wine. Tasted March 2000."
