The Wine Advocate

"The spectacular 2003 Leoville Poyferre exhibits a dense purple color with a touch of lightening at the edge as well as notes of creosote, barbecue smoke, jammy black currants, licorice and spice box. This intense, voluptuously textured, full-bodied St.-Julien possesses low acidity and ripe tannin. Still fresh and exuberant, it is just entering its plateau of full maturity where it should remain for 10-15+ years."

Robert Parker 96 Punkte (Aug. 2014)

"I have had this wine three times out of bottle, rating it 97 once and 98 twice. It is a colossal success and a potential legend in the making. Its saturated, dense inky/blue/purple color offers up notes of crushed rocks, acacia flowers, blueberries, black raspberries, and creme de cassis. A synthesis of power and elegance, this multi-layered wine has spectacular concentration, sweet but high tannin, and low acidity A stunning effort that showcases this legendary terroir, it is a brilliant, brilliant success. The quintessential Leoville Poyferre?"

Robert Parker 98 Punkte (Apr. 2006)

"One of the vintage’s superstars and a candidate for the finest St.-Julien of the vintage, the 2003 Leoville Poyferre rivals the 2000, 1996, and 1990 as one of the best Poyferres ever made (although the 1982 seems to be gaining in stature every time I go back to it). With a dense purple color to the rim, an extraordinary nose of pure cassis and raspberries, enormous body, great richness, high tannin, and low acidity in a voluptuous, almost opulent style, this will be a sensational wine that should hit its accessibility point in about 3-5 years and then evolve slowly for 25+."

This is drinking just great today. Instantly, you are treated to layers of luscious, opulent, sweet, ripe fruit that coats your palate. Silky, full-bodied, rich and flamboyant, if you have a bottle and you're waiting for the right moment, that moment is now! Pull a cork and enjoy it!!! The wine is a blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot.

Not quite fully-mature, but 100% ready to go, this plush, opulently textured, silky wine is filled with sweet, ripe, round, roasted, dark red fruits, tobacco leaf, spice and wet earth. The wine is concentrated, deep and showy. There is no sign of heat of jam. It takes only a splash decant to get the wine going and it takes from there.

An hour of air helped here, adding more body, and depth. The wine offers layers of licorice, blackberry, dark cocoa, smoke and tobacco. Lush, round, sweet and juicy, this is quite sensuous. There is a minor touch of dryness on the backend, but you need to be looking at it closely to see that, as the wealth of ripe fruit is there from start to finish. There is no heat, or jammy notes. The wine is drinking very fine today.

Developed and ready to go, this full bodied, rich, ripe, round wine serves up a delicious blend of forest floor, chocolate mint, black cherry and licorice. Plump and tasty, this is perfect to pop and pour for pleasure.

Cigar box, wet earth, cassis, mint and dark chocolate scents pop with 10 minutes of air. Silky, soft, polished and rich, with a sweet, cherry liqueur filled, opulent finish that tastes as good as it feels. This is much better than the previous bottle. I'm really liking this wine! However, the wine does not need more than 15-30 minutes in the decanter. Also, I'll be finishing my bottles of this wine over the next decade. It's not going to be a long ager.

Double blind, my guess was at least 15 years older than its true age, due to its developed character. Soft, lush, and luscious, there is an array of secondary aromas that really charge you up, with their truffle, forest floor, tobacco, cigar box, cedar, plum and black cherry notes. I do not think this is going to fade sooner than it should, but as the wine is really nice now, why wait to pop a bottle?

Light ruby in color, the wine sings with a nose packed with tobacco, black and white cherries, mocha, smoke, licorice and truffle. Soft, plush, round tannins, layers of voluptuous, ripe, sexy dark fruits and spicy, sweet candied cherries create a long, opulent, enticing finish. This is a winner and one of the stars of the vintage in the Medoc!

The color is pitch black. Cassis earthy, black and blue fruits with hints of espresso bean makes up the perfume. Rich, dense and filled with ripe, spicy, dark fruits, this powerful, concentrated, tannic and round textured wine fills your mouth and palate. This needs at least another 6-10 years before it really starts to strut its stuff.

06: Was soll man jetzt höher bewerten.

VINOUS

"Medium ruby-red. Extravagant aromas of currant, loam, leather and graphite; like the 1990 in its roasted character. Then sweet and dense but with surprising aromatic lift in the mouth, not to mention considerable power. Liqueur-like black fruit, licorice and mineral flavors really stain the palate. Cuvelier maintained that this vintage was not acidified. The cabernet acidity, he said, was healthy and the grape skins gave up their acidity slowly during the vinification. A very impressive showing, and built to last."

Stephen Tanzer 92 Punkte (Mai 2006)

"(a blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon, 25% merlot and 5% petit verdot) Bright medium ruby. Brooding, superripe aromas of black cherry, minerals and chocolate, with a whiff of game. Dense and very ripe, with an explosion of chocolatey fruit in the mid-palate. Despite its sheer size, this is elegant and shapely claret in the making, and not at all deficient in acidity. Ultimately more suave than the 2002, thanks to its lusher texture. Finishes with big but ripe, mouthdusting tannins and superb breadth and persistence."
