„Tasted at the vertical in London, the question was whether the 2000 Montrose would be paradigmatic of a vintage whereby the wines have remained sullen and broody in their youth. On this occasion, to my surprise I found it more open than the 2005 (which admittedly is not saying that it's open for business!). It is a blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc and 2% Petit Verdot picked from 22 September to 7 October. I afforded it a couple of hours in the glass and it responded with plenty of pure ripe blackberry and raspberry fruit, hints of cold slate and even charcoal emerging with time. The palate is not as complex as the aforementioned 2005, yet there is wonderful backbone and focus; towards the finish there is a sense of suppleness and refinement that might make this absolutely delicious in 5-7 years' time. Perhaps the 2000 has been usurped by subsequent releases in 2005, 2009 and 2010, but do not be surprised if it evolves into a regal Montrose.“

„Originally rated 96, this wine confirmed its early rating, although again, the backwardness and still very obvious tannins suggest another 7- to 8-year wait. Dense ruby/purple, with a bouquet of blueberry, crushed rock, and some floral notes, the wine is medium to full-bodied , rich, powerful, but again very tannic and still strikingly youthful. For a wine that is already 10 years of age, it remains infantile. This blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot is indeed a special wine and should hit its prime in about 2020 and last at least 30 years afterward.“

„Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 2000 tasting in London. There is a sense of “controlled opulence” on the nose: blackberry, fig, smoke and touches of boot polish. Very good definition and focus, developing scents of scorched earth/wet clay with time. The palate is medium-bodied, firm tannins, perhaps just a little dry vis-a-vis the level of fruit, muscular, great depth and powerful, but missing a touch of joie-de-vivre towards the finish which means it is a young St. Estephe! Give this time and that mark will tilt upwards. Drink 2020-2040.“

„Tasted at an off-line lunch at The Ledbury. Very deep, almost opaque hue. The nose burgeons with ripe blackberry, cassis, blueberry jam and a touch of damson, lots of glycerine with a touch of shoe-polish. The palate is full-bodied, dense and burly, almost impenetrable at the moment with sinewy tannins, yet with sufficient fruit concentration to ensure a long future for this millennial Montrose. Surly at the moment though so give this wine another 5-6 years in the cellar and then it has the chassis for a long-distance journey. Drink 2016-2030+“

„A sensational Montrose, the 2000 may be the finest produced since the 1996 and 1990. A blend of 63% Cabernet Sauvignon, 31% Merlot, 4% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot (56% of the crop was utilized in the final wine), this sensational, opaque purple-colored 2000 offers a terrific nose of melted licorice, creme de cassis, blackberries, minerals, and smoke. The wine is full-bodied, unctuously-textured, fleshy, and pure, with high but sweet tannin levels. The finish lasts for over 40 seconds. Like most Montrose, the blockbuster 2000 will undoubtedly reveal more tannin as it ages. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2035.“
