"The terrific 2001 appears to be slightly superior to the potentially outstanding 2000. A deep plum/ruby color is accompanied by a delectable bouquet of melted licorice, black currants, smoke, and a notion of chocolate. This expressive, medium-bodied effort boasts sweet tannin, luscious fruit, and a nicely textured finish. Moreover, this up and coming St.-Emilion still sells for a reasonable price. In an effort to improve the quality at this estate, proprietor Philippe Casteja has instituted a more severe selection process in the vineyard as well as the cellars. Anticipated maturity: 2006-2014."

"Dense ruby, even inky purple-colored, this sweet, layered, dense, full-bodied wine looks to be every bit as good as the 2000, possibly finer. The proprietor's decision to pick later and to introduce a second label (starting with the 2000) has resulted in a more concentrated, impressively deep wine that should age handsomely. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018."

"The deep purple-colored 2001 boasts aromas of sweet blackberries, well-integrated toasty oak, melted road tar, and spice. It is perhaps the finest Trotte Vieille over the last quarter of a century. The wine is medium-bodied, well-defined, and ripe, with sweet tannin. It will be at its finest between 2005-2018."
