The Wine Advocate

„The 2016 Peby Faugeres (100% Merlot aged for 18 months in 65% new French oak barriques) has a medium to deep garnet-purple color. Wow—it slides sensuously out of the glass with scents of candied violets, Chinese five spice and chocolate box over a core of baked plums, black cherry compote and warm black raspberries plus wafts of new leather and menthol. Medium to full-bodied, the palate is decadently spicy, with bags of black fruit preserves framed by plush tannins, finishing with a refreshing lift.“

„The 2016 Peby Faugeres is pure Merlot cropped at 22 hectoliters per hectare and matured in 65% new oak. It has a very intense, opulent bouquet with licorice-tinged black and red fruit, although I find more personality in the Faugeres, more terroir expression. The palate is medium-bodied with grippy tannin. It feels spicy and opulent, orange rind infusing black fruit, powerful and intense on the finish. I would just like to see more personality. How does the song go? "I know you got soul." I just want to see it here.“

Decanter Magazine

"An extremely well made, well finessed wine from Silvio Denz. Powerful, a little heavier than some, it has the sexiness and the richness, with liquorice notes, and is one for the hedonists."

Jancis Robinson

"Tasted blind. Neat and well balanced. Spicy, fresh and dry on the end. Good vigour. Sandpaper tannins on the end."

Jeff Leve

„It's not just the insane level of concentration, it's the freshness that comes along with it. And don't for the silky tannins, velvety textures and ocean of licorice, chocolate covered plum, and smoky notes with its finish that doesn't want to quit.“

„Richly textured, opulent, sexy, ripe and fresh, there is a purity to the sweet, dense layers of fruit. Thick yet balanced, the black and blue show through really well here. Stratums of fat chocolate-covered boysenberries coat your palate with long lasting flavor. Even better, there is lift and freshness that makes this a wine you'll want to ponder as well as drink. Produced from 100% old vine Merlot, the wine was aged in 65% new French oak barrels, reaching 14.8% with a pH of 3.6.“

Jean-Marc Quarin

"Le meilleur jamais fait. Couleur sombre, intense et belle. Nez intense, fin, fruité, pur, mûr. Bouche moelleuse à souhait et élancée avec de l’éclat dans le goût (cerise) et une finale longue et savoureuse. Vin charnu, plus précis aromatiquement que parfois (pas d’oxydation prématurée) et délicieux. Très bonne longueur."

James Suckling

"Intense black olives and blackberries on the nose with forest fruit and black truffles. Full-bodied, yet tight and focused with ultra-fine tannins and a savory, salty and juicy finish. Needs four to five years to open. Try after 2024."

René Gabriel's BDX Total

Kunz Fassprobe 17: "(100% Merlot, 22 hl/ha, Produktion 12'000 Flaschen) Konzentriertes, dichtes, süsses, cremiges, komplexes Bouquet, Cassiscreme, Pralinen, Erdbeermark, Tabak, Nougat. Dichtverwobener, vielschichtiger, fein opulenter, cremiger Gaumen mit viel feinem Tannin, konzentrierter Struktur, explodierender Aromatik, dichter, fein muskulöser Struktur, sehr langer, aromatischer, dichter Abgang mit vielen Rückaromen."

Gabriel 2018: "Sattes Purpur, rubiner Schimmer aussen.

Jeb Dunnuck

„This estate produced a blockbuster in the vintage, and the 2016 Château Péby Faugères, based on 100% Merlot aged in 65% new oak, plays with the best of the best. Coming from the oldest vines on the estate and from a southeast facing slop of unique brown limestone soils, this puppy sports a saturated purple color as well as straight-up sexy notes of sweet red and black fruits, dried earth, graphite, tobacco leaf, and hints of chocolate. Deep, full-bodied, and beautifully concentrated, with a seamless, layered texture, it’s another brilliant vintage for this cuvée. It will be drinkable in just 3-4 years and keep for two decades or more.“

„Cut from the same cloth as the 2015, the 2016 Château Peby Faugeres is made from 100% Merlot that saw malolactic fermentation in barrel and is still aging in close to 100% new oak. With a glass staining, inky color and sensational notes of blue fruits, liquid flowers, and toasty oak, this totally thrilling barrel sample hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a pure, elegant, finesse-driven texture, and serious amounts of tannin. Hide bottles of 7-8 years and it’s going to have three decades of overall longevity.

This cuvee from Swiss owner Silvio Denz comes from a 7.45-hectare portion of the Faugères vineyard, which lies on the eastern edge of Saint-Emilion, on the Saint-Emilion/Castillon border. The parcel is mostly older vines and is a unique southeast facing slopes of brown limestone soils. It’s worth mentioning that Jean-Luc Thunevin’s blockbuster Valandraud cuvee comes from a site not far from here and this sensational wine is made with guidance from Stephan von Neipperg for the viticulture and famed consultant Michel Rolland for the winemaking. All these of these wines reviewed here are beautiful.“
