"The 2016 Clos de Sarpe is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, tucked just behind Haut Sarpe, cropped at 25 hectoliters per hectare. I actually tasted this wine from individual barrels in March with proprietor and avid rugby fan (though perhaps not supporting the team you expect) Maylis Marcenet and her father, subsequently via three or four samples. It has a rich bouquet with small macerated black cherries and blueberry, just a touch of warmth coming through, but demonstrating much more precision and detail than vintages in the past. The palate is sweet and candied on the entry, rounded tannin with a licorice tinged fruit, the acidity counterbalancing the intensity of this Saint Emilion with a caressing finish. It will still please those who like opulent Saint-Emilion and yet there is more terroir and precision in this vintage than previously, a path that Maylis told me that they are pursuing."

"Deeply colored, this powerful, dense, rich and intense wine combines concentration and mouth-coating levels of fruit and acidity with ripe, dark red fruits and citrus in the endnote. The wine was made from a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, reaching 15.5% with a pH of 3.3. Currently aging in 60% new French oak barrels, this is a change in the maturation process, as the previous vintages were aged in 100% new oak."

"Le meilleur jamais fait ! Couleur sombre, intense et belle. Nez fin, fruité, pur, mûr et sans aucune oxydation. Bouche grasse et onctueuse avec pour la première fois un très bel éclat fruité et aucune oxydation. Belle finale sèveuse et longue à la tannicité crémeuse. C’est bon !"

"The 2016 Clos de Sarpe is terrific. The opulent, full-throttle style remains intact, but the 2016 is a bit less extreme than some recent editions. Super-ripe red cherry, pomegranate, red plum and sweet spice race forward. Unctuous, sweet and unapologetically flamboyant, the wine possesses notable depth and richness from fruit that is picked on the late side. Clos de Sarpe is unlike any other wine being made in Bordeaux today. The unctuous, port-like style will not appeal to every palate. Even so, in my view, the 2016 is superb and a step up from the wines I have tasted here of late. I can't wait to see how it ages. Jean-Philippe Fort is the consultant. Tasted two times."

"The 2016 Clos de Sarpe is an exotic, full-throttle wine. Expressive floral, white pepper and espresso notes add a super-appealing upper register of aromatic intensity to a core of ripe, red cherry/plum fruit. Sumptuous and racy, Clos de Sarpe remains one of the most distinctive wines being made in Bordeaux today. The 2016 is a bit less over the top than some of the vintages that precede it, but Clos de Sarpe still pushes the outer edges of ripeness and overall intensity. I find it absolutely compelling, but there is no question Clos de Sarpe is not a wine for all palates. Tasted two times. "

"The 2016 Clos de Sarpe has an opulent bouquet of macerated black cherries, sloes and raspberry confit, though I sense more delineation here than in vintages I have tasted previously. The palate is rounded and generous on the entry, offering sumptuous black cherry and raspberry laced with white pepper, clove and bay leaf. There is a sense of headiness here, though it does convey a velvety smoothness and you do find yourself itching for another sip. Very fine."

Pourpre violacé. Bouquet intense, complexe, révélant parfaitement son terroir avec des notes crayeuses. Je relève également des effluves de menthe, de mûres et de groseilles. Attaque friande et juteuse. Quel caractère séduisant et racé en même temps avec un toucher de bouche charmant et une structure mordante qui marque surtout la fin de bouche. Les tannins s’en retrouvent un peu bousculés mais ils ont lamatière nécessaire pour s’accommoder de la structure. Le caractère crayeux est bien présent en bouche également et soutient la typicité du vin. Une très belle réussite. Finale persistante."
