"Having tasted the 1982 Château La Conseillante on numerous occasions, it is fair to say that it has become overshadowed by the 1989 and 1990. Yet it remains not only a prosaically "delicious" Pomerol, but it represents the beginning of a new era for the estate after treading water since the 1960s. This was tasted blind. It has a beautiful, sensual if slightly faded bouquet with mulberry fruit tinged with sage and even a suggestion of black olive that tugs it towards Pessac-Léognan. It lacks the horsepower of the 1989 and 1990, but it is delineated and winsome. The palate is medium-bodied and is brimming over with both finesse and intensity. The quality of the vintage still comes through here, surprisingly deep and voluminous, not as structured as subsequent vintages, but gently fanning out with a subtle wild mushroom note betraying its age on the aftertaste. The bottom line is that this is a lovely, natural La Conseillante perfect for drinking now."

"Ironically, no 1982 La Conseillante I have tasted from my cellar has been as compelling as ones I have tasted from other cellars. This bottle revealed plenty of amber at the edge, and the wine is a denser, slightly more rustic version of the 1990. Nevertheless, it is an outstanding effort revealing plenty of black currant, kirsch, smoke, herb, and incense characteristics, a full-bodied, voluptuous texture, and melted tannins. My bottle seemed slightly less concentrated than others I have had, but this is still a great, fully mature La Conseillante that is best consumed over the next decade."

"My problem with this wine is that I suspect the case I bought as futures was somehow slightly damaged in shipment, as none of the bottles from my own collection were ever as good as those tasted elsewhere. Tasted four times in 2002, all from other cellars, the wine was absolutely brilliant. This is a candidate that tasted so delicious young, I would have never expect it to be so magnificent 20 years later. Nevertheless, it is an example of how balance and concentration, in spite of extremely low acidity and sweet tannin, can fool even experienced tasters. The wine has not fully matured in over a decade, and shows no signs of decline. There is considerable amber to the color, but the aromatics are spectacular. Notes of Christmas fruitcake intermixed with jammy black currants, sweet kirsch liqueur, toasty oak, licorice, and truffle are stunningly intense and persistent. In the mouth, this is all silk, with a voluptuous texture, almost unctuous thickness to the concentrated fruit, and a long, lush, heady finish. It is a slightly deeper wine than either the 1989 or 1990, but at the same time slightly heavier, no doubt because of the elevated alcohol and glycerin. Nevertheless, this is prodigious stuff."

"This wine has been fully mature for over a decade, yet it continues to improve with each tasting. It reveals a light color with noticeable orange and amber at the edge. Spectacular aromatics explode from the glass, offering up scents of toasty new oak, kirsch liqueur, black currants, cedar, and licorice. Lush, sexy, and opulent, with a silky entry as well as velvety texture, this plush, seamless, medium to full-bodied Pomerol remains fruity and fresh, with gorgeous intensity and length. While I have under-estimated this 1982's longevity from birth, I would still opt for drinking it over the next 5-8 years."

"This wine has never tasted as thrilling from my cellar as it does from other sources. (Does that bother me?) None of my bottles have ever shown any evidence of heat damage (poor fills, stained labels, raised corks), but from my cellar, the wine is (and has been) fully mature with considerable amber to its color. Although it is an outstanding effort, other examples have revealed far more richness and intensity, making me think they were more typical of the heights achieved by La Conseillante in 1982. In several blind tastings, I have mistaken it for Lafleur, which should tell readers just how great this wine can be. While I am not prepared to say it rivals the heroic duo of 1989 and 1990, La Conseillante's fully mature 1982 boasts an exceptionally sweet nose of fruitcake, jammy cherries and currants, complemented by scents of sweet, toasty oak. Exhibiting this estate's hallmark silkiness and voluptuousness, this lush, rich, concentrated wine is impossible to resist. It has been delicious its entire life, yet is capable of lasting another 10-15 years. With wines such as this, I see no reason to defer one's gratification . It is about as seductive, perfumed, and hedonistic as Bordeaux gets. Tasted 19 times since bottling with consistent notes when tasted outside my office; from my cellar, the wine consistently merits a 89-92 point review."

VINOUS

"Medium red with an amber rim. Exotic aromas of plum, cherry, roast coffee, tobacco leaf and woodsmoke. Sweet, silky and suave, with lovely inner-mouth perfume. More subtle and sophisticated than most right-bank '82s, with solid underlying structure. Finishes firmly tannic, with sneaky persistence. Classy juice, for drinking over the next 10 to 12 years."

Stephen Tanzer 93 Punkte (Juli 2002)

"The 1982 La Conseillante was the first bona fide success after a long period languishing in the doldrums and the good news is that even after 36 years, this Pomerol continues to give immense pleasure. The aromatics embrace primary and secondary aromas. You can still feel the plushness of fruit that the warm vintage bestowed with mulberry and black plum aromas. Compared directly with the 1989 it is clearly more mature and yet still so pleasurable. The palate is medium-bodied with tannins that have mellowed in recent years, a mixture of red and black fruit, tobacco and clove, a splash of Earl Grey and black truffle towards the finish that is only just becoming loose-knit. It is a wonderful 1982 Pomerol that has probably got another decade on the clock if bottles are of sound provenance. Tasted at the "International Business & Wine" Pomerol dinner at 10 Trinity."
