The Wine Advocate

"Under proprietor Ronan Laborde, Clinet has returned to the high quality witnessed in 1989 and 1990 under the helmsmanship of the late Jean-Michel Arcaute. Made from a final blend of 85% Merlot, 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc that hit 14% natural alcohol, the inky, opaque purple-colored 2011 exhibits notes of blackberries, blueberries, espresso roast and subtle oak. Full-bodied, layered, opulent and flamboyant for a 2011, with loads of concentration and glycerin as well as a long finish, this is one of the most impressive wines of the vintage. It should drink well for two decades."

"Tasted twice the second time at the property with Ronan Laborde. The Clinet 2011 is a blend of 85% Merlot and 12% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc picked from 7th September until 26th September. It has a ravishing bouquet with multi-layered, creamy dark fruit, blueberry, cassis and a touch of vanilla pod. It soars from the glass and takes no prisoners. The palate is full-bodied with rich saturated tannins, low acidity, rounded and sensual in the mouth with an intense, voluminous finish that leaves a touch of oyster shell as its calling card. A second sample at the chateau promoted the fine tannins, offering a much more delineated finish, much more precise but a little drier (possibly because of the more cloudy weather.) Excellent Mon. Laborde! Tasted April 2012."

René Gabriel's BDX Total

"85 % Merlot, 12 % Cabernet Sauvignon, 3 % Cabernet Franc. Sattes Purpur-Granat, dicht in der Mitte, lila Schimmer aussen. Viel Brombeerentöne, welche sich mit etwas Cassis vermischen. Eleganter Gaumen, zeigt Saft in den fein stützenden Tanninen, irgendwie schon Chambertinhaft in seiner Art. Fast schon ziemlich gross, einzig das Fett und der Druck fehlen im Moment noch. Aber das kommt dann schon von den Barriques beim weiteren Ausbau."

VINOUS

"Ruby purple. Dark fruits and coffee on the musky, slightly reduced nose. Broad, ripe and dry, with a graceful texture to the deep flavors of cassis, black cherry and dark chocolate. Began rather monolithic but showed emerging sweetness and very good grip with aeration. Finishes with a firm spine of acidity and mouthcoating tannins, with lingering hints of ripe dark fruits and tobacco."

Falstaff

"There is a replanting programme underway at Clinet, covering around 30% of the vineyard, with the aim of increasing cabernet sauvignon. Owner Ronan says he is very aware that they are at the limit of alcohol in the merlot, and that they need to take steps to address it, not only by the replanting of other varieties, but by changing the rootstock of the merlot also. Cabernet franc just 3% at the moment, really looking at cabernet sauvignon instead. Have good clones, as some cab sauv was planted just after world war 2. There oldest vines in the vineyard are 76 year old merlot, and he plans to keep them for as long as possible.

Overall, the 2011 blend is 85% merlot, 12% cabernet sauvignon, 3% cabernet franc. You immediately get the smoky aspect in this wine, from the 55% new oak barrels, 45% one year. Until 2004 Clinet was at 100% new oak, but reduced it ever since, because looking for more fruit. This has some real depth of flavour, there is evident oak, but it is gourmet, and adds interest. Very good.
