The Wine Advocate

"The 2016 Clos Marsalette, the Pessac-Léognan property of Comte Stephan von Neipperg, is a blend of 45% Merlot, 53% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc that was picked between 4-18 October and matured in 35% new oak. It has a clean and precise bouquet with blackberry and bilberry scents, a fine undercurrent of minerals. I like the elegance on display here. The palate is medium-bodied with mulberry and blackberry on the entry, a touch of black olive and quite a saline second half that is both fresh and detailed. This should drink well over the next decade. It's just a delicious wine--no more, no less."

Jeff Leve

"Smoke, dark cherry and tobacco notes create the bouquet. On the palate, the wine is medium bodied, fresh, supple, and forward, with a dark cherry and espresso filled finish. The wine was made from a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 2% Cabernet Franc . "

James Suckling

"A wine with lots of deep fruit, round and juicy tannins and a savory finish. Very driven by the fruit for the appellation this year."

René Gabriel's BDX Total

"Samtenes, süsses, kräftiges Bouquet, Brombeeren, Erdbeergelee, Mocca, Zedern. Cremiger, dichter, frischer Gaumen mit kräftiger, süsser Frucht, feinem Tannin, vielfältiger, süsser Aromatik, langer, aromatischer Abgang. Kann noch zulegen."

Wine Spectator

"A bright sanguine note gives this a distinctive feel, while racy cassis and bitter cherry fruit fills in behind. Offers a long singed juniper note through the finish. A bit atypical in profile for Pessac, but the focus and energy is enjoyable.—J.M."

Bettane & Desseauve

VINOUS

"The 2016 Clos Marsalette is dark, powerful and juicy. The flavors are deep and boldly sketched in this fleshy, succulent Pessac Léognan from Stephan von Neipperg. Black cherry, plum, slate, violet and licorice infuse the creamy, resonant finish. It will be interesting to see if the 2016 develops more aromatic nuance over time. At this stage, it’s all about dense, almost primary, fruit. Tasted three times."

Antonio Galloni 88-91 Punkte (Apr. 2017)

"The 2016 Clos Marsalette is super-expressive and delicious today. Savory herb, cedar, tobacco, menthol, licorice, rose petal and wild cherry all run through this nuanced, inviting wine. Aging has brought out an aromatic quality the wine did not show en primeur. Medium in body and gracious, the 2016 is a terrific choice for drinking now and over the next handful of years. Tasted two times."

Antonio Galloni 91 Punkte (Jan. 2019)

"The 2016 Clos Marsalette was picked from October 4 to 18 and bottled in June 2018. It has a tightly wound, quite broody bouquet that demands encouragement from the glass. There is lovely pure fruit here, but it prefers to remain in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with an earthy, smoky opening and notes of blackberry and mulberry laced with dark chocolate and five-spice. The finish feels grippy but just a little stern at the moment. Give this three to five years in bottle."
