Tasted blind at Bordeaux Index’s 10-Year On horizontal. This has a lovely bouquet that is so pure and vibrant: blackcurrant, cigar box and a touch of smoke all with great delineation and panache. The palate is medium-bodied with a slight softness on the entry, but then it really pulls together with a crisp, slightly leafy finish that is full of vigour and poise. This is a beautifully crafted Claret.“

„Very clear in colour, the nose is very well defined, especially apposite the 2003, with precise dark cherries, blackberry, a touch of bergamot and dried leaves. It is a quintessential Graves bouquet. The palate is full-bodied with burly tannins, a firm masculine structure although the fruit is marching to a slightly different beat to the tannins. For all the accusations of modernity, the finish is very austere and obdurate, very classic but with good persistency. It should improve over the next 3-4 years.“

„A brilliant dense purple color is accompanied by an extraordinary perfume of camphor, graphite, plums, cassis, and barbecue spices. A prodigious, multilayered, medium-bodied effort with exceptional concentration, a fabulous texture, and a 50-second finish, this brilliant achievement is one of the vintage’s monumental wines. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2020+. P.S. Yields were a mere 28 hectoliters per hectare, which no doubt explains the wine’s stunning concentration. One of the superstars of the vintage, Pape Clement’s 2001 provides further evidence that this property, ambitiously managed with great dynamism by visionary Bernard Magrez, is pushing quality to the maximum and is obviously attempting to go head to head with its most famous rivals, Haut-Brion and La Mission-Haut-Brion (both located a few miles from Pape Clement).“

„A brilliant achievement and one of the wines of the vintage, Pape Clement's remarkable 2001 should surpass their fabulous 2000. A magnificent effort, it was produced from yields of 28.6 hectoliters per hectare, and the final blend (70% of the production) consisted of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The multi-textured/layered 2001 boasts an opaque purple color, amazing purity and presence on the palate, a sensational texture, and loads of graphite, lead pencil, plum, fig, black cherry, and currant fruit. Medium-bodied, extraordinarily elegant as well as remarkably concentrated, pure, and suave, it is a tour de force in winemaking. Anticipated maturity: 2009-2028.“

This medium-bodied, extraordinarily elegant as well as remarkably concentrated, pure, and suave offering it is a tour de force in winemaking. Pape-Clement's remarkable 2001 is a brilliant achievement that should prove to be a worthy rival to their fabulous 2000. This is one of the greatest wines of the vintage, produced from yields of 28.6 hectoliters per hectare, and the final blend (70% of the production) consisted of equal parts Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. One of its neighbors remarked that Pape-Clement had more people sorting grapes at the winery (120 employees) than harvesting! Anticipated maturity: 2006-2020.“
