„Tasted at Berry Brother & Rudd’s vertical. The 2004 Haut Bailly has a deep garnet colour. The nose is a little reticent at first and the unfurls in the glass with blackberry, mocha and graphite, a lactic note suggesting that there is still some wood to be integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with fine balance and filigree tannins. This is a patently not a Chateau Haut-Bailly of power or intensity, but it sits back and reclines in a comfy chair. There is a dash of pepper right on the finish of this foursquare but elegant Graves that is drinking now, but should age over 15 years, possibly twenty.“

„Tasted at the Fine Wine Experience vertical in London. Not quite as limpid as the 2005, the nose has moderate intensity with touches of granite, blackberry leaf and minerals. Nice definition. The palate is tannic, well balanced, nice purity, touches of cedar, tobacco and smoke, leading to a leafy finish. Moderate length. Well-crafted, touch of hitherto unnoticed savouriness towards the fleshy but tense finish. A lovely 2004 full of charm. Drink 2011-2030.“

„A lucid garnet colour with deep crimson rim. A very tightly coiled, but pure nose of black cherries, minerals, a hint of hot bricks and olives. Good definition. The palate is medium-bodied, not complex or ambitious, yet is beautifully balanced and refined. Great acidity and precision with a vibrant, focused, tense finish. Cherry, blueberry and a touch of cedar. Excellent length for a 2004, this is certainly one of the best wines of the vintage. Drink 2012-2030.“

„The 2004 Haut-Bailly is a candidate for the finest wine of the appellation. Its dark ruby/purple color is accompanied by classic aromas of scorched earth, sweet black currants, cherries, and a hint of pain grille. Light on its feet, but substantially flavored, it possesses stunning purity, good acidity, ripe tannin, and abundant flavor as well as length. It builds incrementally and subtly in the mouth, but it’s the real deal.“

„A superb success, the 2004 exhibits exceptional concentration, elegance, and an almost surreal finesse-infused character along with firm tannin, sweet, concentrated red currant, black currant, and cherry fruit, and subtle notes of spicy new oak. Displaying fresh acidity as well as remarkable intensity and persistence in the mouth, and medium-bodied, concentrated flavors, it should reach full maturity in 5-7 years, and last for two decades or more.“

„This is an estate to watch now that American banking kingpin, Robert Wilmers, has turned loose a brilliant team that includes the “retired” Jean-Bernard Delmas of Haut-Brion as a consultant. One of the finest Haut-Baillys produced in many years, the 2004 is a wine of great class, nobility, and pedigree. A deep ruby/purple color is accompanied by subtle scents of smoky oak, sweet raspberries and kirsch. It possesses medium body, impressive precision, a beautiful texture, a gracious mouthfeel, no hard edges, and a long, subtle finish. A brilliant effort for the vintage, it should be at its apogee between 2009-2020.“

„A ripe rounded blackberry, damson nose with a touch of black olive. Very concentrated palate with good grip. Very dense, dominated by tannins at the moment. Needs a bit more fruit concentration to make it well-balanced but this is a fine, sturdy, bold Pessac wine.“
