„A beauty from Carbonnieux, the 2005 has a dense ruby/purple color and a sweet nose of charcoal embers, smoke, graphite, black cherry and blackcurrant fruit. It is medium to full-bodied, pure and lush as well as beautifully textured and long. This wine is just entering its plateau of maturity and should hang there for at least another two decades.“

„Tasted single blind at Southwold. Showing so well in barrel, this has really closed down at least on the palate. The nose has dusty black fruit, black pepper with nice definition. Medium-bodied, a little coarse, with dried blood and spice. Nice character but the finish is rather brutal and needs more aeration than I could afford it. I’m keeping the faith! Drink 2013-2020.“

„Surprisingly reminiscent of a Burgundy grand cru such as Corton, this 2005 Pessac-Leognan offers a dark ruby hue as well as beautifully sweet, leafy, black cherry, and smoky aromas intermixed with hints of oak and earth. Not a blockbuster, it is a wine of finesse, delicacy, and purity with lovely balance, good acidity, ripe tannin, and a sweetness that permeates the flavors as well as the tannic structure. It should be drinkable at a relatively young age. Anticipated maturity: 2012-2025.“

„The finest Carbonnieux in nearly fifty years, this cuvee is reminiscent of a grand cru Burgundy, largely because of its sweet cherry, forest floor, and smoky components. The stunning 2005 possesses more concentration than usual, but never loses sight of its finesse, elegance, or that earthy style so characteristic of a Graves. While the sweetness of the fruit, remarkable purity, and beautiful texture are delicately presented, they are authoritative and intense. Anticipated maturity: 2013-2026.“

„The finest Carbonnieux I have ever tasted, the deep ruby/purple-tinged 2005 offers gorgeously sweet aromas of black cherries, cassis, spice box, smoke, and new oak. Medium-bodied, beautifully rich, savory, and spicy, with moderate tannin, it will be drinkable between 2009-2025. It reminds me of a synthesis in style between a grand cru Burgundy and a classic Graves. It is a brilliant wine!“

„A very attractive, quite oaky nose. Blackberry, damson and cigar box. Firm tannins on the palate. Good balance and freshness. Acidity is nigh on perfect. Slight coarse mouth feel but in a pleasant sense. Some dryness on the finish mars what could have been an excellent Carbonnieux, but still commendable.“
