The Wine Advocate

"A fleshy, dramatic rendition of this Moulis benchmark, the 2019 Poujeaux unwinds in the glass with a deep bouquet of blackberries and plums mingled with subtle hints of cigar wrapper, loamy soil and violets. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's deep and seamless, with succulent acids, powdery tannins and a long, expansive finish. This has turned out brilliantly and numbers among the real sleepers of the vintage.

In total, Château Poujeaux amounts to some 70 hectares, but the core of the blend derives from a 50-hectare block on a deep gravel dome that many consider the finest terroir in Moulis. Cabernet Franc hasn't worked well here, so the tendency is to replant with Cabernet Sauvignon, which today amounts to around 50% of the estate's surface area. Charm and refinement are the order of the day here, winemaker Laurent Perroteau and proprietor Matthieu Cuvelier disclaiming any desire to "be what they are not": vinification is classical, with temperatures up to 28 degrees Celsius, followed by malolactic in tank and maturation in some 30% new oak for 12 months on the fine lees. The result is a supple, fragrant, seamless wine, and the 2019 stands out as a particularly fine Poujeaux, one of the best of the modern era. It's one of Bordeaux's greatest values and a château I'm happy to have in my own cellar—back to the terrific 1928 no less!"

"Deep garnet-purple colored, the 2019 Poujeaux has an oh-so-tempting nose of blackcurrant pastilles, redcurrant jelly and warm plums with touches of pencil lead, underbrush, cinnamon toast and wild thyme. The medium-bodied palate has a fair bit of chewiness giving way to loads of lovely, ripe fruit with soft acidity, finishing savory."

Decanter Magazine

"Brambled autumnal fruit on the nose, this is good stuff from a property that is consistently impressive. Not as fully powered or concentrated as its 2016, but as ever it offers a more serious and restrained take on the vintage than some of its Moulis siblings, and as such delivers wines that are built to last. Always extremely classic Left Bank in feel, and it achieves that feat again here. Plenty of tannin grip, clear austerity on the finish."

"50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot. Barrel sample.
Muted dark-fruit aromatics. A touch of sweetness on attack but not overdone. Fleshy mid palate. Firm tannic frame behind but the finish a little tough and chewy. Trying too hard?"

"Fresh and already showing loads of flowers, dark cocoa, black cherry and wet earth on the nose. Round, soft and approachable, you can enjoy all the ripe, sweet, lush fruits with just a few years of aging. And even better, you can keep it for up to 2 decades. The wine is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 45% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot, reaching 14.1% alcohol."

Jean-Marc Quarin

Assemblage : 50 % cabernet sauvignon, 45 % merlot, 5 % petit verdot. Degré d'alcool : 14° - pH : 3,8. Rendement : 48 hl/ha. 2025 – 2049."

"Solid as a rock this year with blueberries and crushed stones. Dried lavender, too. It’s medium-bodied, yet structured and long. Excellent."

Jeb Dunnuck

„The 2019 Château Poujeaux showed beautifully, with classic Médoc notes of red and black currants, sweet tobacco, spice, and some floral and cedar nuances. With medium-bodied richness, supple tannins, and a great mid-palate, this thoroughly satisfying, impeccably made 2019 will keep for 10-15 years.“

„Always a well-made, charming wine, the 2019 Château Poujeaux has classic Bordeaux notes of tobacco leaf and cedar as well as beautiful currant and plum fruits, a medium-bodied, rounded texture, good mid-palate depth, and ripe yet chewy tannins on the finish. Enjoy this satisfying, well-made Moulis over the coming 10-12 years.“

VINOUS

"The 2019 Poujeaux is gorgeous. Pliant and radiant in the glass, with terrific palate presence, the 2019 captures all the richness of the year and yet also stays light on its feet. Sage, rose petal, spice and sweet macerated cherry all grace this ethereal, vivid and very pretty Poujeaux."

Antonio Galloni 90-92 Punkte

"The 2019 Poujeaux has a more introverted bouquet than some of its Moulis associates, though it opens nicely offering black cherries, liquorice, pressed iris petals and touches of crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied with insistent grip on the entry. This Poujeaux has good backbone, almost Pauillac-like in style with a dense and persistent finish that augers for a long-term wine that will repay those with the nous to cellar it a few years. Superb."
