The Wine Advocate

"The 2021 Batailley shows promise, exhibiting aromas of cassis, plums, licorice, cigar wrapper, loamy soil and dark chocolate, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and charming palate built around ripe, powdery tannins. Supple and giving, it will offer a broad drinking window."

Decanter Magazine

"Perfumed, floral, heady nose. Lightly framed in terms of texture, but with a really intense and concentrated core of sweet red and black fruit flavours, with cocoa powder and liquorice that go vertical as well as horizontal, filling the palate with aromas as opposed to direct weight from the tannins. Feels like a delicate and pared-back style for this estate, carefully presenting the vintage in the glass with harmony and balance. Juicy and flavourful, it will be even better after ageing. Tasted twice. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend."

Jancis Robinson

"Cask sample. Fresh and simple aromatically; dark and red fruit with a slight herbaceous note. Supple and loose-limbed on the palate with light but fine tannins. Lacks a bit of clout but attractive fruit and everything in balance."

Jeff Leve

"Medium-bodied, soft, elegant, fresh, and chalky with nuances of chalk, tobacco leaf, forest floor, and red with black currants. The wine is soft and creamy with a nice sweetness on the elegantly-styled palate, there is a lot of charm as well as freshness here. The wine blends 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 2% Cabernet Franc. It is interesting to note that Batailley was the first major wine released from the 2021 vintage, and it was priced the same as the 2020 vintage. Time will tell if this was a good strategy or not. Drink from 2026-2049."

Jean-Marc Quarin

"Couleur sombre, intense et pourpre. Nez très aromatique, fin, fruité, pur et subtil. Minutieux en entrée de bouche, très aromatique au milieu, avec un corps caressant et élancé, ce vin offre une trame tannique distinguée et savoureuse jusqu'en finale. Tannicité non marquée. De la tenue et du charme. Assemblage : 76 % cabernet sauvignon, 20 % merlot, 2 % cabernet franc, 2 % petit verdot. Degré d'alcool : 13° - pH : 3,7. Rendement : 48 hl/ha. Pas de gel, ni de mildiou."

James Suckling

"Subtle aromas of currants and fresh flowers with some tar and graphite. Medium-bodied with firm tannins and bright acidity. Very typical and bright for Pauillac. Linear and fine. Solid and tight. Well age nicely."

Jeb Dunnuck

"The ruby/plum-hued 2021 Château Batailley has classic, almost old school notes of leather, red and black fruits, tobacco, and dried herbs. This carries to a medium-bodied, firm, focused, yet balanced, attractive Pauillac that should round into form nicely over the course of its élevage. It's not one of the standouts in the vintage, yet I certainly wouldn't be surprised to see it end up being an outstanding wine, and it has lots of character. "

VINOUS

"The 2021 Batailley was picked September 30 to October 15 and matured in 55– 60% new oak. It has a well-defined, focused bouquet, a quintessential Pauillac nose of black fruit infused with cedar and mint. The palate is medium-bodied with a touch of black pepper on the entry and delivers good depth and fine grip. This is a Batailley with commendable stuffing for the vintage and it fans out with gusto on the finish. It might not be the best Pauillac in 2021, yet I bet you won’t find better value for money, notwithstanding its underestimated propensity to age."

Falstaff

"Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung. Nuancen von Brombeeren, reife Zwetschken, ein Hauch von Cassis, zart nach Nougat und Orangenzesten, einladendes, fruchtiges Bukett. Saftig, mittlerer Körper, rote Kirschen, feine Tannine, mineralisch und gut anhaftend, ein frischer, feinwürziger Speisenbegleiter."
