Weinbeschreibung
Man kennt die Skepsis und die Argumente aus dem Fußball: macht Geld Champions? Übertragen auf die Verhältnisse bei Château Montrose heißt das: macht die ökonomische Potenz der neuen Eigentümer, der Brüder Bouygues, das Weingut zu einem Favoriten in der Bordeaux-Championsleague? Meine Antwört wäre: nicht das Geld, sondern der Wille!
Mit atemberaubender Klarheit zeichnet sich ab, dass am nördlichsten Punkt des Médoc, der berufen ist, Weine vom zweiten Adelsstand hervorzubringen, mit höchster Konsequenz in den letzten beiden Jahren perfekte Ausprägungen monumentaler Größe entstanden sind. Das, was nicht weit entfernt unter der Ägide von Alfred Tesseron auf Pontet-Canet seit nunmehr 17 Jahren passiert, wurde hier, quasi im Zeitraffer, in 3 Jahren realisiert: die neue Definition absoluter Weingröße. Und natürlich darf man sich nicht scheuen, einen Vergleich mit dem Nachbarn Cos d'Estournel zu ziehen. Die Entwicklung dort kommt mir ein wenig vor wie die Liebe der Futuristen in den 20er Jahren: die Vergötterung der Technik. Gleichwohl bringt diese Liebe Weine von einzigartiger Exotik hervor.
Verkostungsnotiz:
Der in kolossale Schwärze gekleidete Montrose zeigt initial ein Naselspiel, das vor allem mit Zeit und in Muße dechiffriert werden will: schon im Bouquet offenbaren sich die Qualitäten zeitzehrender komplexer Fülle. Die Fruchtaromen sind von dunklen Früchten dominiert, mit flankierendem Himbeertouch, und werden von einem frischen Mineralienhauch, feiner Edelholzwürze, Kaffee- und Tabaknoten begleitet. In einer sehr beeindruckenden Mischung aus druckvoller Kraft und elegantem Gleiten füllt der eminent tiefgründige und wohlkonstituierte Wein den Gaumen aus und entfaltet dabei ein Erlebniskonzert höchster Klasse und Rasse. Der enorme Fruchtschub saftiger Fleischigkeit wird dabei bestens vom feinziselierten und dichtgewobenen Tanningrund ausbalanciert und führt den superben Montrose zu einem finessenreichen, langanhaltenden, fruchtinsprierten Finale von hohem aromatischem Esprit.
Die Wiedergeburt des monumentalen 1990er im noblen Gewand edelsten Gerbstoffzuschnitts ohne kraftprotzende Extrovertiertheit, mit „state-of-the-art-Extraktion“ und überlegener Zurückhaltung.

Robert Parker:"Jean Delmas believes this is one of the all-time great wines of Montrose, comparable to the 2009, 1990, 1989, 1959, 1947, 1945 and 1929. The 2010 harvest took place between September 27 and October 15, and the final blend is 54% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot that achieved 13.75% natural alcohol, a fraction above the 2009's 13.7%. Somewhat reminiscent of the 1989, only even inkier and richer, the 2010 boasts a dense purple color along with glorious aromatics of blueberries, boysenberries, black currants and a crushed chalk-like minerality. The tannins are less intrusive than I would have suspected for such a young Montrose, but they are unquestionably ripe and well-integrated. Deep, full-bodied and massive, this beauty should be at its finest between 2018-2050."

Reserviertes Bouquet, florale Cabernetnoten, schwarze Pfefferkörner, Havanna-Tabak. Kompakter Gaumen, rote Pflaumenschalen, ein Hauch Dörrfrüchte, dunkle Hölzer, noch mehlige Tannine, wie immer mit sehr viel versprechendem Potential bestückt. Kein grosser Kommunikator und deshalb vielleicht unterschätzt. Seine hohe Punktezahl wird er erst in 20 Jahren erstmals beweisen können."

This is the first year with the extra 20 hectares of vines bought from Phelan Segur, and is slightly higher in merlot as a result. Again, this truly captures what you want from a St Estephe, plenty of structure and power, but fresh and elegant. As with last year, this has confidence and personality, a great wine. Harvested from September 27th to October 15th, with 45hl/h 95+/100. Drink 2020-2045."

Opaque in color, with a nose of coffee, blackberry liqueur, cassis and spice, this is a powerful, dense, massive, tannic wine. Firm and structured, the wine paints your palate with a wall of fruit, tannin and acidity. This big wine will require decades to develop. "

"This is a top Montrose: gorgeous deep red, delicate, subtle and elegant on the nose- the nose of a first growth, really! And this is exactly what impressed me most; ripened yet superbly fresh fragrances of raspberry mingle beautifully with scents of blackcurrant - a trait which is so rare and incredibly hard to achieve. After such a fantastic nose, I must admit I expected a more vigorous entry. The wine picked up power and breadth gradually and particularly on the mid-palate. Then it literally melted away, dense and ethereal in the mouth, before ending on one of the best weaves of tannins for Montrose since the 1996 en primeur –only this time even more mature and sophisticated. Mighty finish, where aromas take the structure over. This 2010 Montrose is sheer aesthetic bliss for our senses. It is the most polished vintage since the new management took over. Its effort for precision and balance bears the Delmas-mark and reminds us of how Haut-Brion is built. It is also the least subdued vintage that the estate has ever presented in mid-February. The work and effort put in so as to raise quality are truly praise-worthy. I must admit I failed to understand the changes fully when they were brought about and judged the 2006 and 2007 presentations too discreet, linear even.
Today, the estate is rethinking just about everything and a new cellar is being put in place.
Always tuned in to nature’s rhythm, Montrose is slowly but surely taking its due place among Bordeaux top labels. No doubt it is destined for great heights.

"Tasted at the Château, Montrose is a blend of 53% Cabernet Sauvignon, 37% Merlot, 9% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot picked between from 27th September through to 15th October, cropped at 45hl/ha. It has 13.8% alcohol with a pH 3.65. The bouquet is tightly wound at first, pure blackberry, dark cherries, just a touch of coca with very good vigour. Very juicy, quite saturated with a very dense, impenetrable finish. Sinewy, structured and masculine, with a slight saline touch on the aftertaste. This is a great Montrose that will one day be fascinating to compare against the 2009. Drink 2020-2050. Tasted March 2011."

Grossartig und konsequent: Die gigantischen Investitionen der neuen Besitzer (Familie Bouygues) kommen klar zum Tragen. 2024 bis 2050."
